Summer Olympics
With numerous sporting events already scheduled for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, some fans may think there are already enough athletic contests for the event. However, there are many great sports that would generate a lot more fan interest than some of what is on this year’s Summer Olympic schedule.
Take a closer look at the top 10 sports that should be in the Summer Olympics:
10. Bowling
Bowling recently became an official high school sport in Louisiana. Also, my alma mater, Tulane University, now has bowling as an NCAA sport. A spot in the Summer Olympics would confirm that bowlers are world class athletes.
9. Horse racing
Winning the Triple Crown is one of the most prestigious accomplishments in all of sports. But if horse racing becomes a Summer Olympic event, would it be the Quadruple Crown every four years?
8. Cheerleading
If this becomes a Summer Olympic event, the debate would finally be over as to whether or not cheerleading is a sport. Cheerleading would also be a great opportunity for the Summer Olympics to have a coed sport.
Personally, I find food eating contests disgusting. But it’s not about how I feel. It’s all about what’s best for the Summer Olympics. And what personifies summer more than eating hot dogs?
6. Fishing
Freshwater or saltwater, fishing would be an awesome sport to add. Of course, each boat would need a judge to ensure that the fish could be instantly measured, weighed and released.
5. Pro wrestling
For years Americans and Russians have competed against each other in both pro wrestling and the Summer Olympics. Besides, who wouldn’t want to see Kurt Angle win another gold medal?
4. Robot fights
If pro wrestling is too violent of a sport, then how about letting robots fight? The Summer Olympics could feature both life sized robots duking it out or smaller robots designed by evil nerd geniuses.
3. Frisbee
Like eating hot dogs, playing Frisbee is one of the enduring symbols of summer. In fact, I could see both Ultimate Frisbee and disc golf as new sports. Speaking of golf… (just kidding).
2. Planking
Although planking would be a great new Summer Olympic sport, it would be highly controversial because of the subjectivity of choosing a winner. Of course, planking on Big Ben in London would be hard to beat.
1. Dodgeball
The intensity and athletic ability required to compete at a high level in dodgeball makes it the most obvious sport to add to the Summer Olympics. Dodgeball would also be the most highly rated sport on television.
Honorable mention sports that should be in the Summer Olympics
MMA, mountain climbing, shuffleboard, spelling bee, texting
