The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey – It’s Going to Be a Family Affair

This superfan (your writer for this article) knows exactly where he will be at 12:01 AM on December 14, 2012; God willing and the creek don’t rise! He will be parked (with his family) in front of a movie screen waiting with bated-breath the start of the new Peter Jackson movie “The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey.” Already trying to sneak a peak at any movie trailer that becomes available, the excitement level for this superfan continues to build while he anxiously awaits the official release of this movie.

With a passion that started 45 years ago when given a 9TH grade English assignment to read and write a book report on The Hobbit, this 59 year old superfan has been enamored with J. R. R. Tolkien’s works ever since. Although the starting price of admission into the Tolkien superfan club begins with one acquiring their own personal leather bound copies of Tolkien’s two classics “The Hobbit” and the “Lord of the Rings” (LOTR), much more is necessary to be a member in good standing. One’s personal collection should include all of the following if they really want to be considered a superfan:

Books

  • · The Hobbit – in leather bound edition
  • · The Lord of the Rings – in leather bound edition
  • · The Silmarillion – in hard copy
  • · The Children of Hurin – in hardcopy
  • · The Tolkien Reader
  • · The Tolkien Companion (a book by J. E. A. Tyler)

Movies (in both the classic and extended versions)

  • The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The Two Towers
  • The Return of the King
  • The Hobbit (classic 1977 animated version)
  • Lord of the Rings (1978 animated version)

I will not be the only person in the family that will be anxiously awaiting the release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey. All three of my boys were brought-up with an intense appreciation for Tolkien’s books and Jackson’s fine adaptations of these books in his movies. Going to watch Jackson’s movies became a wonderful family event full of popcorn, excitement, and intense conversation after the movies were over.

It will be very interesting to see just how closely Jackson follows the original writings of Tolkien in this new movie. Jackson seemed to remain reasonably faithful in the first three LOTR films, but producing a series of three movies for The Hobbit with much less material to work with might prove to be a challenge. I, and many thousands of others, will be keeping an eye out for just what liberties Jackson takes in his series of films covering The Hobbit.

I am especially interested in seeing what Jackson is able to do with the dragon “Smaug” in terms of both his technical visual presentation, and just how convincing a job Benedict Cumberatch does as the voice of Smaug. One memory that remains vivid is how excellently Richard Boone did in the animated version of The Hobbit in providing the very arrogant and sinister voice of Smaug. This could turn out to be either spectacular, or a huge disappointment, but I am getting restless waiting to find out one way or the other!
