Being a musician, I have been personally upset over the heated battle that has been rising on the subject of online guitar tabs. The apparent issue that has come up is the legality of being able to look up a song online and learn it, it is as simple as that. For anyone who may be wondering, guitar tab is a type of sheet music that is expressed in numbers rather than symbols to represent different positions of the neck of a guitar. There are many web sites such as tabcrawler and OLGA that provide these tabs for anyone who is trying to use these tabs as a method of study. Many of the tabs that are posted are often ones transcribed by ear in which is an assumption of how a song is played. Whenever a musician hears a strong and unique sound in a song and is inspired to learn it, sites like this are a great tool to help to understand what is being done to get the sound.
It is my opinion that the battle to keep online guitar tab will be hard fought, but whether or not we end up being able to use it as we do now is a tough question. All it took for downloading music to become a crime was a few upset artist who didn’t believe it was fair to get it for free, now the same topic has to come up over the notes being shown for the songs online. Some sites like Mxtabs.net have already decided that the issue just wasn’t something that they wanted to have to deal with. Now whenever you try and find a certain guitar tab on the site, you get a message that they are unable to display the tab due to the huge dispute. I’m sure that in the long run, the biggest thing that is going to become an issue is how much you should have to pay to learn how to play a certain song.
One of the things that I enjoyed the most about playing guitar was the fact that it felt like it was an unlimited and amazingly vast hobby where I wasn’t limited in any way to what I was able to learn. Everything that I know now in some way is from online guitar tab. When I turned twelve years old, I got my first guitar because my best friend had learned a few things on the guitar that had me fascinated. Anything that he learned came from online guitar websites which was then passed on to me. Every single song that I learned how to play made me more and more unique as a guitar player and gave me the utmost sense of confidants and inspiration. As an alternative, there are newer sites that offer an interactive lesson which contains the official tabs to certain songs, for a certain fee. A positive side to this is the certainty of the song’s accuracy, but the chance of these kinds of sites becoming the only alternative to learning something on your own is a major downside.
It makes me cringe to think that future generations may not have the same and equal learning experience that I did. Many websites that offer online guitar tabs also offer different lessons regarding different scales and chord patterns. Whenever you learn a song from a certain band from online guitar tab you get to see the technique that is used to be able to play the song. In my experience with online guitar tabs, I have taken a little bit of something with me from every single thing that I taught myself which has made me a well rounded guitar player.
It seems to me that with all the promotion that is out for the music industry today that there would be enough money to be satisfied with without having to pick and scrap over the notes that are played in the songs. Think of how much money is made from the concerts, and the band merchandise, from the cd’s that are sold, and the money from radio play. It is sad that there has to be a fee to learn in the footsteps of your idols. If my band were to get popular enough to where my band’s music is online, I would in no way be greedy enough to try to make money off of someone who is simply inspired.
After learning a song from a certain artist, there was always an overall sense of appreciation that I got from the difficulty of the guitar parts. Being able to see and apply whatever I heard with guitar tabs, I was able to get a whole lot more out of the music that I was listening to. If anything, the use of online guitar tabs helps to promote the consumption of more music . For example, if a couple of friends where to hear you playing a well known song, they may be more inclined to go and check out the bands cd which would in turn make money for the artist/music industry. It would be my bet, that without the aid of online guitar tabs that there wouldn’t even be as many new artists and band’s that we know of today. Guitar tabs are a huge inspiration to anyone who learns who to read them which is why I think that the more inspired you are to learn music the better you can be at it. If the conclusion to the battle over legality is lost, then I think there will be a great loss to the future of self taught artists.
