“The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It” – the Worse Movie Ever Made

Spoofs are hard to pull off, and they only really work when they’re taking a shot at something that tries to take itself seriously. Spoofing comedy never works, and if you don’t believe me and have time to waste, take a look at “The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad about It.” This film pretends to spoof a number of comedies; mainly “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” which starred Steve Carell as a, you guessed it, 40-year-old virgin whose buddies find out and try to hook him up, but with digs at “Knocked Up,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and “Superbad” as well.

“The 41-Year-Old Virgin,” stars Bryan Callen as Andy, a 41-year-old who has never had a woman. It follows him and his roommates through a series of gross, politically incorrect misadventures in his quest to end his virgin status. Released in June 2010 in the U.S., and in 2011 in Argentina, Italy, and the Netherlands, the approximately $1.3 million it took to make this lemon could have been better spent.

I caught this dud on cable TV, and, like watching a train wreck, had a hard time pulling away from it, not because it was in any way interesting, but because I wanted to see if the scene on the screen when I tuned in was the worst it offered. It wasn’t. Think of the dumbest jokes or action you could imagine in a movie and chances are you’ll find it here. How about a fight between two girls, one grossly pregnant, with one girl’s eye being knocked into the plate of a nearby diner, who takes a look at it and then eats it.

I won’t even describe the scenes in the delivery room when Andy’s pregnant girlfriend delivers. Suffice it to say, they offend every group, racial or religious, you can think of. Even the opening credits offend. Try this on for size: “Written by one white guy and one black guy”, “Produced by a cheap bastard”, “Edited by a nappy haired crack head”, “Starring people that look like other people who aren’t Jewish.” I can forgive the two writers; they were probably sitting around one day and thought, let’s write a real gross script and see what happens. But, the producers, director, and actors; come on, is this a case of mass hysteria or what?

There is one thing this movie did that is perhaps positive, though; it has broken me of the habit of tuning in to late night movies. Ordinarily, when a movie is less than stellar, my suggestion is to wait until it comes out on DVD. In this case, save your money; unless you have an iron stomach, or absolutely no taste in movies, there’s no way you’ll watch the whole thing.
