Teach Your Fourth Grader Multiplication with These Tips

When you begin teaching your 4th grader multiplication, it is important the child memorizes their multiplication facts. In other words, before you begin teaching the child how to multiply, you may want to teach them the multiplication facts. That will make things a lot smoother. Once your child has grasped basic multiplication facts , you can continue on with showing them how to multiply. You will find several tried and true ideas below on how to teach fourth grade multiplication.

Teaching the Basics

Here are some ideas for teaching multiplication facts:

  • Flash Cards – Multiplication flash cards will help your child learn. Some children do better with flash cards, and some children do better in other areas. You can purchase flash cards from just about any department store. You can also make your own flash cards by using index cards.
  • Games – There are quite a few games you can download on the computer to teach your children how to multiply. Most of the games are free, or offer trial downloads. If the 4th grader is a gamer, try going the game route.
  • Songs – If your 4th grader loves to sing, try using multiplication songs. Schoolhouse Rock is a great resource for teaching multiplication. They offer a cool little song to help with learning multiplication.

Teaching Multiplication Ideas

Teaching 4th grade multiplication can be done a couple of different ways. The first way is by simply using worksheets. Some children do better by writing and getting the feel for the multiplication. If you want to teach multiplication by using worksheets and showing the child how to multiply, there are many resources for worksheets. You can purchase math workbooks with multiplication worksheets only. Or, you can find many free multiplication worksheets online and create your own worksheets. You can also teach multiplication by using online games and multiplication sites. These sites range from basic multiplication teaching to more advanced games where the child has to complete a multiplication problem to continue in the game.
