Super Bowl 2011 Location Becomes Icy

The Super Bowl 2011 location promised extravagance. Instead, the Super Bowl 2011 location has been a bit frozen so far. This game had to be held in Dallas, to show off Jerry Jones’ billion dollar stadium. Jones has been criticized for his extensive spending, yet the fact that he shelled out enough for a roof has been a lucky break. Thanks to a cold front, and some ice and snow, the Super Bowl 2011 location will not be ideal for pregame tailgating, or much other pregame activity.

When Dallas received this game, no one could see that a massive winter storm would spread across the country this week. Although the area didn’t get hit as hard as the Midwest, the conditions are less than ideal, and less than warm.

Fortunately, the Super Bowl 2011 location doesn’t have an indoor stadium, so the weather won’t affect the Packers and Steelers. Still, it may affect fans who drive over to the game, since things won’t get much warmer before Sunday.

Of course, these are far from the harshest conditions to hit a host city. Detroit was in the teeth of wintery weather in 1982 and 2006, while Minnesota was less than warm in 1992. But due to their domes, the players were toasty warm, even if they weren’t before they got inside.

Still, the Super Bowl 2011 location is now under a lot of criticism. The icy conditions will be more problematic for the fans than the players – and the fans are already afraid that this is the last football game for some time. Therefore, the NFL needs this game to run smoothly, but the weather could make that more difficult.

In addition, the winter storm has revised debate over a recent controversial decision. In a few years, Super Sunday will be held in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to show off the Giants and Jets new home. Virtually everyone believes the weather will be awful that day, and there won’t be a dome to hide that.

When Dallas was selected as the Super Bowl 2011 location, weather was not a primary concern. It still won’t be for the game itself, but it has now become a leading subplot beforehand. Since the media strains for subplots during this annual two week wait, the ice and snow is filling the gap at the worst time.

The Packers and Steelers have already had their plans altered, since they must practice indoors. Because the Cowboys had their indoor facility collapse last year, and didn’t repair it, the teams had to find alternate locations. Now they must hope that it doesn’t put too much of a damper on their preparations.

Thanks to Cowboys Stadium, the Super Bowl 2011 location was supposed to host a massive show. It still stands to be huge on Sunday, yet fans hope it won’t be too much of an adventure to see it.
