Ruth’s Healthy Homemade Trail Mix Recipe

For centuries, people have made foods that did not require cooking and could be eaten while traveling long distances. One of these particular edible creations that has been used is trail mix.

Trail mix is typically a delicious combination of various nuts, dried fruits, and other foods that help to provide the consumer with lots of energy. With the fall season almost upon us and many people gearing up for some hiking or biking expeditions, trail mix will become yet again another popular mainstay of choice.

August 31 is National Trail Mix Day, and in honor of that day, I would like to share one of my own personal recipes.

1 cup of Cheerios

1 cup of pretzels, any shape you like

1 cup of pumpkin seeds, raw or roasted depending on your preference

1 cup of sunflower seeds, shelled and unsalted

1 cup of Rice Chex

1 cup of dried pineapple (Funky Monkey’s Jivealime pineapple is delicious in this mix)

1 cup of dried mango (try to use the kind that does not contain sulfur dioxide if possible), cut into cubes

1 cup of raw or roasted almonds

1 cup of organic chocolate chips

Mix all ingredients in a big Ziploc bag. Shake and mix well. Redistribute mix into smaller Ziploc bags. Enjoy!

This trail mix is wonderful for taking along as a snack on outings, packing in a child’s lunch, or eating as a healthy treat between meals.
