Review: Hershey’s Pot of Gold Nut Assortment Chocolates

Every year Fred Meyer has a huge sale the day after Thanksgiving, and every year they have a “Buy 1 Get 1 Free” sale on Hershey’s Pot of Gold chocolates. We find that these make a great Christmas gift for nearly everyone … after all, who doesn’t like chocolate?

We purchased eight boxes, two of the Pecan Caramel Clusters, and two of the Nut Assortment. The first is good, the latter is my favorite.

Description

Each box is 7.7 ounces, and contain fewer chocolates than I thought they would. Until now, the only company who identified and printed on the lid what each chocolate piece contained, was Whitman’s Chocolates. But Hershey’s has also done this, making it very easy to choose a piece that is right for you.

There are four different types of chocolates in this box, which are nestled individually into a plastic tray, with two trays to a box.

Hazelnut Bouquet:

What a treat! I love hazelnuts, and hazelnut flavored coffee, so this choice is one of my favorites. The chocolate pieces are triangular shaped, measuring about 1″ in diameter. They are pretty simple, a large flavorful hazelnut is covered in a generous amount of chocolate. There are eight of these in each box, four are in milk chocolate and four are in dark chocolate.

Pecan Caramel Cluster:

These pieces are round, and about 1 1/2″ in diameter. They consist of roasted pecans and gooey soft caramel, covered in creamy milk chocolate. The box contains eight of these.

Signature Piece:

This candy is shaped like a brick of gold, measuring 2″ x 1 1/4″. It has the words “Pot of Gold” engraved across the top, and is made of pure milk chocolate. There are no nuts in these pieces, and there are only two of these in the box.

Golden Almonds

Another one of my favorites, because I love almonds. These are large almonds, covered in a layer of milk chocolate. Simple as that, and very tasty. There are eight in the box.

How Fattening Are They?

These are not for those trying to lose weight! Five pieces contain 240 calories, 7 grams of fat, 5mg of cholesterol, 40mg sodium, 21 grams of carbs, 1g fiber, 19g sugars, and 4g protein.

Recommendation

These are not quite as good as the fine chocolates like Godiva, but they will satisfy a sweet tooth. They are expensive at the regular price of $8.95, and I would never pay that for one box. There are 24 covered nut candies in the box, (8 of which are the small chocolate covered almonds), and two of the solid chocolate Signature Pieces.

Hershey’s refers to these as a premium offering pecans hazelnuts, and almonds enrobed in rich milk and dark chocolate.

We have friends over during the holidays, as well as being invited to others homes, and it’s nice to serve these, or give your host/hostess a box of chocolates as a small token of your appreciation. Over the years I have been in a situation where somebody gave me a gift that I wasn’t expecting, and having a stash of these boxed chocolates to return the favor is handy. One Christmas some of our church members had a white elephant Chinese auction, and someone forgot to bring a gift. I quickly wrapped up a box and the rest of the guests were fighting over that gift all night.

If I gave somebody the famous holiday gift of fruitcake, I wouldn’t be confident that they’d like it. I don’t have any doubts when I give chocolate. It’s a gift that everyone loves. These are a nice gift, the gold color box looks a bit elegant, and you know these won’t end up in the garbage like the fruitcake!
