Review: Chung’s Chicken Egg Rolls

I mentioned in an earlier review that I went to the store yesterday and ended up buying items for a homemade Chinese buffet. One of the things I ended up purchasing was the one item I actually went to the store for; egg rolls.

I had intended on buying the brand I usually buy from that store. But, after learning they once again raised the price, I looked in other sections of the store for something different. Hidden in a different freezer were chicken egg rolls from the brand Chung’s.

This brand really wasn’t any cheaper than the other brand. But, I had never tried it before and, since I’m not overly crazy about the other brand, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to give them a try; especially since I wasn’t spending any more money on them.

It turns out I should have just stuck with the other brand.

At first, I didn’t think there would be any real difference between these egg rolls and others we have purchased and, if nothing else, I would get roughly the same quality. And, when I made them, I really couldn’t tell much of a difference. They were about the same size as other brands and, when I bit into them, they had just as much, if not more, than other brands.

However, the Chung’s chicken egg rolls seriously lacked overall quality. I bit into the first one and, right away, I noticed a taste that just seemed to be a bit off. It is really difficult to describe it but it wasn’t the most pleasant thing I ever tasted. It was actually a bit sour tasting; like you would get if you ate a piece of meat that had been left out too long.

At first, I thought maybe it was just me. But, my wife also made a similar comment regarding the egg roll she had tried.

I also wasn’t impressed by the quantity of meat inside the egg roll. There was chicken. But, I had to take a couple bites that were almost all vegetables before I got to it.

I was so disappointed by these, I ended up throwing part of my egg roll away and didn’t even make an effort to try the other one I had waiting for me. And, I couldn’t help but notice my wife didn’t go back for seconds on this particular item either. In other words, I might not have spent any more money trying this brand over our usual brand. But, I did feel like I wasted it.
