Review: Checkers Rally’s Famous Fries

I mentioned before that my wife did some grocery shopping a few days ago once I got paid and, since she did her shopping on an empty stomach, picked up some items that she probably wouldn’t have bought if she wasn’t hungry at the time.

One of the things she purchased was a bag of Checkers Rally’s Famous Fries. She apparently had eaten that that restaurant before (I have never even heard of it), remembered their food and, as a result, was interested in trying their frozen French fries. She also apparently found them for a good price; though she never did tell me exactly what she paid for them.

When I saw this product, I had a mixed opinion on it. They did look somewhat different from other frozen French fries that we’ve purchased in the past. But, at the same time, I have purchased plenty of other products that used a famous restaurant on their label and have usually been disappointed with them. The fact this product had a restaurant I had never even heard of really gave me some doubts.

We ended up making the fries to go with dinner Friday night (I can’t remember what we had for an entrée) because, if nothing else, we figured they would be something our kids would eat. And, after trying them, I have to say I was actually pretty impressed with them.

One of the first things I noticed about these fries is, unlike so many other frozen brands, they actually managed to get crispy when we baked them in our toaster oven. Crispy fries, to me at least, are a must and if a fry is limp or too soft, they just aren’t as good. I did not find a single fry in the batch we made that wasn’t crisp.

Another thing I liked about these fries was the flavor. Even though I have never eaten at Checkers Rally’s, I have eaten at Arby’s and the fries reminded me a lot of the fries I love buying at that restaurant. Rather than just tasting salt, I could taste a few other spices and definitely felt like I was eating a fry that I purchased while eating at a restaurant rather than one that came out of my freezer.

As I said before, I don’t know what my wife paid for these fries and I am assuming they were slightly more expensive than others. But, and I don’t say this too often, they were worth the extra money.
