Restaurant Review: The Montgomery Inn BBQ at Comerica Park

I think few fans visiting Comerica Park to see the Detroit Tigers realize what the Montgomery Inn BBQ, located out in right center field has to offer them. The food is a great change from the regular baseball fare hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, cotton candy and other customary choices.

The Montgomery Inn BBQ at Comerica Park, is air conditioned and has table and chair, as well as booth seating. The air conditioned atmosphere makes for a more enjoyable location for eating a meal at the ballgame, plus you can still watch the game from many of the seating locations. The restaurant is decorated with many photos of past and present Detroit Tigers and Championship Teams. You must order your food and take it to your chosen seating as this restaurant is not one with a wait staff.

The Montgomery Inn Rib basket, priced at $11.00 is served with homemade potato chips and coleslaw. The ribs are tender and melt in your mouth and the bar-b-que sauce has one of the best flavors I have tasted. The restaurant also offers bar-b-qued pulled pork sandwiches and bar-b-que chicken wings, both priced at $8.00 and both also come with homemade potato chips. There is no lack of meat on the sandwich and 8 wings come in the wing basket. The homemade potato chips are one of my favorites at the restaurant, they are served warm and with a side of the Montgomery Inn bar-b-que sauce for dipping. At $5.00, the potato chips are one of the best deals in the entire park and they taste great. I spoke with a few fans visiting the restaurant prior to the start of the game and asked them what they thought of the food. While everyone seems to feel the prices a bit high, the three people I spoke with liked different things and said they have chosen to eat at the Montgomery Inn on their past three visits to Comerica Park. Gary D., from Royal Oak told me that his favorite Montgomery Inn item is their Garlic French Fries ($5.00), he said they are priced right, served hot and fill him up. He said if he comes to a game really hungry he couples the ribs with the fries and a Mikes Hard Lemonade ($6.75) to drink.

While the restaurant is a long walk from quite a few of the seating locations in Comerica Park, the walk is worth it when you figure in the taste of the food you will enjoy once you get there and you can even watch the game while you eat. The air conditioned atmosphere also provides another added benefit to your walk, but if you enter the park from the Witherell street entrance, you are less than 100 feet away from the elevator (located inside the Big Boy restaurant) that takes you to the upper deck location of the Montgomery Inn. I doubt you will be disappointed if you decide to visit the Montgomery Inn BBQ on your next visit to Comerica Park. Whether you choose to try the ribs, chicken wings, pulled pork sandwich, garlic french fries (absolutely wonderful) or homemade potato chips, you will most likely enjoy the taste of the food.
