Removing Laminate from Counter Topping

Removing laminate from counter topping is a job that can be accomplished in a weekend. Don’t let the chips, flaws or stains on laminate counter topping distract from the overall appearance of the kitchen. Replace the laminate with hundreds of colored laminates that can be purchased at locations like Lowe’s and Menards.

Tools:

Tools required for removing the laminate from counter topping include a drill, channel locks, utility knife, steam iron or heat gun, pressing sheet if using a steam iron, wrecking bar or pry bar, spray bottle, paint scrapper, shop rags, safety goggles, masking tape, and plastic sheeting or tarp.

Materials:

The material needed to remove laminate counter topping include Acetone or Lacquer thinner.

Removing Old Laminate:

Begin by removing all household items from the counter top. Once this has been completed, remove the sink and any built in appliances. Make sure to shut off any gas, water, or electricity that will be affected by removing the counter topping. Cover the base cabinets and floor surrounding the cabinets with plastic or paper. This will protect the cabinets and floor from removal solvents and glue. Remember, safety first.

Start by removing the laminate edging using a utility knife at an end and then pull. Once the edging has been removed, begin removing the laminate counter top. Using a utility knife and loosen a corner or edge. Lift the corner or edge and spray a glue solvent under the laminate. Acetone or Lacquer thinner may be used. Let stand for up to 5 minutes until the glue breaks down. (Keep checking to see if the glue has released. The same timing should work throughout the entire process.) Pull up and insert the wrecking bar or pry bar. Whichever bar is used, it will help to open a space underneath the laminate to spray more of the chosen solvent. Repeat until all laminate is removed.

Heat may be used in removing laminate counter topping. Use a heat gun or steam iron to heat the laminate. Place a pressing cloth between the steam iron and laminate to prevent burning. Heat will break down the adhesive. Use a wrecking bar and begin on an outer edge. Work from the edge then move inward until all laminate has been removed.

Note: The preferred method of removing laminate counter topping is using either Ascetic or Lacquer thinner. If the heat is not used properly, it may cause a fire so be cautious. If the solvent does not work on all of the laminate, then try using heat. A combination of both methods may be needed.

Final Preparation:

No matter which process is used in removing laminate counter topping, the surface underneath will need to be free of any old glue prior to adhering new laminate. Sanding and scraping will need to be done. Wood putty will need to be put into any holes, let dry and then sand. Let the area dry completely before installing new laminate.
