Product Review: Dr. Oetker Mousse

I love to entertain but I don’t always the time to do it the way I want to. I prefer, whenever possible, to cook everything from scratch. However, with my busy schedule these days that doesn’t happen very often. Consequently, I’ve learned how to cut a few corners along the way.

When I cook a formal meal, dessert is always included. I can’t help it. I come from the old school way of thinking where meals are served in courses and end with a dessert dish. If I have the time, I like to use one of my own recipes. But, as I said, these days that is rarely possible. Therefore, I’ve found a few wonderful products that allow me to make gourmet desserts very quickly.

One of my favorite product lines comes from Dr. Oetker (sometimes labeled simply as Oetker). They make the most amazing mousse desserts. I believe they are better than anything I can prepare from scratch. However, if you tell anyone that I said that, I will vehemently deny it. After all, I have to keep my gourmet cook status.

The product comes in a 4.2-ounce box. It is in powder form, requiring only the addition of milk or cream (your choice) to complete the recipe. All you have to do is mix the two together and beat on low speed with a mixer for about thirty second. Then continue beating at high speed for three to five minutes longer. It should then be chilled for at least thirty minutes.

I sometimes use the mousse by itself, just spooning the mixture into dessert dishes before chilling. Other times I mix two or more of the mousse flavors together in layers. Another option I often choose is to make a mousse pie, using either a ready made graham cracker, standard, or Oreo crust or a cookie/candy crust that I made myself. To finish it off, I spritz a coating of whipped cream on top; sometimes adding sprinkles for color.

In standard dessert bowls, the product yields about four servings at ½ cup each. In layer form it will be dependent upon the number of layers involved. Add four servings for each individual mousse added to the mixture. In pie form, it will serve between six and eight individuals.

The mousse comes in several flavors including:

Chocolate Irish Cream, offersa delicious milk chocolate with just the slightest hint of minty freshness;
Chocolate Raspberry, boastsa smooth, creamy chocolate with just the right kick of raspberry flavoring;
Creamy Delight Pistachio, an unusuallysmooth and creamy light pistachio flavored mouse with extra pistachio pieces thrown in for even more flavor;
Creamy White Chocolate Mouse with Chocolate Flakes, combines the best of two chocolates – – fluffy white mixed with dark chocolate flakes;
Dark Chocolate Mouse & Dark Chocolate Mouse Light, boasts a deeper, richer dark chocolate with less calories and fat in the lighter version;
Dark Chocolate Truffle Mousse, offers the deepest, richest chocolate flavor of all;
Double Chocolate Mousse, soabsolutelyperfect for those who prefer the richer taste of dark chocolate;
French Vanilla and French Vanilla Light, brings a lighter taste of white chocolate with French vanilla and less calories and fat in the “light” version;
Milk Chocolate Mousse and Milk Chocolate Mousse Light, softer than the dark chocolate version with less calories and fat in the “light” version;
Supreme Mocha Chocolate, offers just a hint of coffee flavoring that makes this dessert unique and scrumptious;
Supreme Strawberry and Light Strawberry, boasts a fresh fruity taste with less calories and fat in the “light” version;
White Chocolate Mousse, done European style, this one is lighter still than most other mousses.

A standard half-cup serving of mousse equals 130 calories and carries 4 grams of fat and 17 grams of sugar. It also has 45 milligrams of sodium and 21 grams of carbohydrates.

Oetker costs between $2.29 and $3.59 per box, depending upon where it is purchased. It is available in some grocery stores as well as online.

When you need a quick, luscious dessert, Oetker definitely fits the bill. Give it a try. I think you will find it remarkably delicious. I give it five stars!
