Product Review: Delsym Cough Syrup Suppresses Coughs for 12 Hours

My daughter had a horrible cough. If that wasn’t bad enough, she had a potentially serious condition and was scheduled for an MRI. The only problem is that she would be required to stay perfectly still for an entire hour during the MRI. That is difficult in the best of times, but impossible with a persistent cough. She had tried numerous cough medications to no avail, so I was concerned we were going to have to reschedule the MRI. Thankfully, two friends recommended Delsym Cough Syrup. Though skeptical, I purchased it, gave it to her, and within 30 minutes she completely stopped coughing. Delsym is now the only type of cough syrup I use.

Delsym Cough Syrup works by sending a “don’t cough” message to the cough reflex center in the brain. Thankfully, in my experience, this works well as the brain tends to obey the anti-cough message it receives. Besides the fact that it works, I like Delsym Cough Syrup for the following reasons:

1. Delsym Cough Syrup is the only over the counter cough medication that last for twelve hours. This is accomplished through a time-released formula. That means that it is only necessary to take it one time in the morning and one time in the evening. There is no need to carry some of the cough syrup with you to take throughout the day. Although it may not seem like much, only needing to take the cough medication twice a day rather than four or six times a day as is typical with other cough medications gives you that much less to think about when you’re already not feeling well. It also means that it won’t wear off while you’re sleeping. With other cough medications that don’t last as long, it is common to wake up in the middle of the night due to coughing and have to get out of bed to take more medication. Delsym’s 12-hour time released cough syrup will suppress your cough all day long, and then provide a much-needed good night’s sleep.

2. Delsym Cough Syrup is less expensive than the other name brand cough syrups. At first glance, it may seem that Delsym is more expensive than other brands of cough syrups because the price tag is high compared to other cough syrups with the same number of ounces. However, since it is only necessary to take two doses per day compared to four or six doses per day in other brands of cough syrups, the cost per dose is actually lower if you choose Delsym Cough Syrup rather than other brands of cough syrup.

3. Delsym Cough Syrup can be used by almost every member of the family. There is a warning on the package to consult a physician before giving Delsym Cough Syrup to children under the age of two, but it can be safely used by children age two and up. The only difference to be aware of is that the dose for children is smaller than the dose for adults. The dose varies by age and is clearly marked on the package and on the bottle. This makes it convenient to not have to have multiple types of cough syrup for different members of the family.

4. Delsym Cough Syrup actually tastes good. Delsym Cough Syrup has a pleasant orange flavor and is devoid of the typical “mediciny” taste in most cough syrups.

5. Delsym Cough Syrup doesn’t contain fever reducers or other drugs you may not need to take. It contains only one active ingredient, dextromethorphan, which acts to simply suppress the cough. Why take a drug for reducing fever when all you need is a cough suppressant?

As is true with most medications, if you a pregnant or nursing, or if you are taking certain medications such as MAOI drugs (used for depression and other psychiatric conditions), don’t take Delsym Cough Syrup without first consulting with your doctor.
