Navigating the NYC Subway: B/D from Fordham University

Fordham, Fordham University, New York City Subway, The Bronx

The New York City Subway stops just minutes from Fordham University, with the B and D lines of the subway stopping at the corner of E. Fordham Rd., popularly referred to as just “Fordham Road”, and the Grand Concourse. If you walk further up Fordham Road, the 4 train stops at the corner of E. Fordham Rd. and Jerome Ave. If you’re coming back to the Bronx between the hours of 10:00PM and 5:00AM, there is supposed to be a security shuttle waiting at the D train to take you back to campus. However, based on my personal experiences, this isn’t always the case.

As far as the two (well, technically three) subways that serve our area are concerned, the D train primarily serves the “west” side of Manhattan, while the 4 train serves the “east” side. The B and D lines of the Subway run on the same tracks, but the two lines do split in Brooklyn. The D train runs closer to the west coast of Brooklyn, and continues on to Coney Island, which is the last stop. The B train runs more inland than the D train after splitting in Brooklyn, and finishes up at Brighton Beach. The 4 and B/D trains traditionally serve a similar area in the Bronx, but the trains split at the 161st St./Yankee Stadium station.

As a Fordham student, you will probably find yourself on the D train more often than the 4 train due to the D train being closer to campus.

QUICK FACTS ABOUT THE D TRAIN:

– The D train is considered an “express” train, but actually runs local in the Bronx, and express in Manhattan, as well as northern Brooklyn. The D train runs express in the Bronx during rush hours in the peak direction. In other words, if you are traveling INTO Manhattan during the hours of 6:15AM – 9:00AM, the D train will not make local stops in the Bronx. If you are traveling OUT of Manhattan during the hours of 4:00PM – 6:45PM, the D train will also not be making local stops in the Bronx.

How this relates to Fordham:

– Well you won’t have to worry about having to switch trains or anything like that if you’re on the D train, regardless of what time it is. The D train always stops at the Fordham Road station.

– If you plan on returning to campus anytime between 4:00PM – 6:45PM, it’s usually a good idea to hop on the D train. The same applies to if you’re heading into Manhattan during the morning rush hours; you’ll be skipping five stops in the Bronx, and saving about fifteen to twenty minutes off your trip.

Best Transfer Location(s):

59th Street/Columbus Circle – A/B/C/1/2
34th Street/Herald Square – B/F/N/Q/R/V/W
*NOTE* 34th St. is one block from MSG/Penn Station, which also has A/C/E/1/2/3 + LIRR/NJ Transit/AMTRAK
West 4th Street/Washington Square – A/B/C/E/F/V
(BK) Atlantic Ave./Flatbush Ave. – B/M/N/Q/R/2/3/4/5

QUICK FACTS ABOUT THE B TRAIN:

– The B train is a bit of an odd train, with some hours that you have to watch for. The B train will only stop at Fordham Road during the rush hours of weekdays. This means that you will only see the B train at the Fordham Road station between the hours of 6:00AM – 9:30AM and 4:00PM – 7:00PM. South of 155th Street in Manhattan, the B train stops “part time”, meaning from 6:00AM – 9:30PM on weekdays. You will not travel on a B train (barring some sort of scheduling changes due to repair work or any other scheduling change) during the weekend, or outside of the hours aforementioned.

– Well, there isn’t a whole lot to say here except for the fact that you should try to avoid the B train if you can. If the B train is even running, don’t bother hopping on unless it’s for only a few stops. Stick to the D train and other express trains in Manhattan for getting around.
