“Anne of Green Gables,” written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, is a heart-warming tale about a young orphan girl named Anne and her experiences in the new town.
Story
In the story, Anne is adopted by a kindhearted man named Matthew Cuthbert and his uptight sister Marilla; however, she has a hard time adjusting and fitting into her new life from the start. Upon her arrival at Green Gables, she causes nothing but trouble for her neighbors and classmates causing Marilla to consider sending her back to the orphanage. Anne meets an ill-mannered boy named Gilbert in school who makes fun of her red hair and a rude girl named Josie who simply hates her. Before long though, Anne starts making new friends of her own and her oddly amusing personality begins to grow on Matthew and Marilla as they get more and more used to the idea of her living with them in their home.
Main Characters
Of all literary characters I’m familiar with, there’s none quite like Anne of Green Gables. She is quick-tempered, bold, impatient, and yet still somehow manages to be loveable. She has an extreme interest and passion for writing and a great imagination. She outright refuses to tolerate insults waged against her and does everything she can to ensure that her wrongdoers suffer the consequences of their actions. Simply put, all of the qualities and emotions that define Anne defines me. For this reason, I feel a deep connection with the story since I can identify so well with her character.
Matthew is an open minded, considerate, and hard-working old farmer who spends most of his time out working in the fields. It’s not long before he develops a certain kind of fondness for Anne and he’s quickly taken by the girl’s odd childish behavior.
Marilla, on the other hand, is a close minded, stern, and obstinate old lady who disagrees with everyone on almost everything. Her qualities are comparable to those of Anne’s who is also a one-track minded and stubborn individual. Unfortunately, many disappointing aspects of her bring to mind my step grandmother. Enough said. Fortunately, later on in the story, Marilla develops healthy character traits like those found in her brother Matthew.
Real Life Lessons
“Anne of Green Gables” is a good read because while it keeps the reader entertained, it also provides him or her with valuable real life lessons. For instance, take a good look at all the type of struggles Anne has to face as the “new girl” in town. She is regarded as a nuisance by her elders and bullied by her peers. If you’re like me and you’ve just moved to another town, making adjustments to unfamiliar faces that show complete disregard towards you is not an easy task. Like Anne, the more time we spend getting acquainted with our new surroundings, the more we are making our presence known. Eventually, by doing so, we will gain the respect of others.
To sum it all up, “Anne of Green Gables” will take you on a journey where characters grow and blossom like butterflies and magical transformations take place.
