Movie Review – Abduction (2011)

Nathan

Taylor Lautner has gained significant success since his role as Jacob Black in the Twilight series. This multi-talented young man has a promising career in the martial arts field as well. It is apparent in the film Abduction that he is not an amateur karate expert.

Abduction tells the story of a high school senior, Nathan, who has been paired with his friend and neighbor, Karen, to work on a science project for their sociology class. The project involves checking websites of missing children. Karen laughingly points out that one of the missing children, about six years old, looks like Nathan. Nathan takes the discovery seriously and notices also that the boy in the picture is wearing a child’s sweater which Nathan still owns from his childhood.

The discovery begins a long, involved drama of car chases, foreign intrigue, CIA activity, death threats, explosions, fires, and hideouts, all of which had never entered the serene life of Nathan or Karen prior to this time.

A foreign-born group of men are determined to kidnap Nathan who, they suppose, has access to important data given to him by his natural father. This brings up the fact that the couple who Nathan believes are his biological parents have only been caring for him since he was a toddler. They have never discussed this issue with Nathan.

The film should be labeled a thriller since every moment brings a new revelation with its accompanying thrill. Fortunately, Nathan (aka Steven Price) has his friend Karen by his side, particularly when his foster parents are killed and he learns that his biological mother has also passed away. That leaves only his natural father, who is an underground CIA agent, unable to be a part of Nathan’s life – that is, until Nathan learns that he somehow has possession of the important data that the enemy is seeking.

Nathan’s therapist, Dr. Bennett (Sigourney Weaver) contacts Nathan and directs him to a hideout apartment which Nathan realizes is used by his natural father, Martin. Nathan takes his father’s phone which later plays a significant role in the resolution of the mystery.

Nathan does not know which persons he can trust, as two groups of men are bent on abducting him. One professes to be part of the CIA. In all his confrontations, Nathan realizes that his foster father’s constant teaching of the martial arts to Nathan since his childhood was geared to prepare him for the brutal skirmishes he is forced to endure at this later point in his life.

Rather than reveal any spoilers, this viewer would encourage the reader to see the film Abduction. It will afford you two hours of hair-raising suspense which will leave you breathless. I guarantee that Taylor Lautner’s acting as well as his persona will force you to follow his every move throughout this highly intriguing film.
