Modoc’s Market in Wabash, Indiana

In this day and age, it is hard to imagine a town without a Starbucks. After a series of unfortunate events, I am living near such a town and that town is Wabash, Indiana. Wabash is a small town located on the banks of the Wabash River. There are many big, historic, Victorian-style homes. The claim to fame for this town is that it was the first electrically-lit city in the United States. A second claim to fame should be the unique Modoc’s Market, located at the corner of Market Street and Miami Street. If you’d like to see for yourself, visit their website at www.modocsmarket.com. Modoc’s market is named after an elephant who escaped from the circus in 1942 and stormed the streets of the town. The decor of the market is elephants everywhere. One has never seen so many elephant-themed posters and figurines in one place!

Modoc’s Market is a lot of services rolled up into one building. First, the coffee bar is outstanding. They roast their very own coffee blends on site to produce great tasting coffee. I thought I would miss Starbucks, but this coffee surpasses those other franchised coffee shops. My favorite drink is a butter pecan latte. Absolutely delicious! The employees are friendly and eager to suggest their own favorite concoctions. Secondly, Modoc’s Market is a wireless hot spot. It is extremely hard to find wireless hot spots in this area so I am very thankful that they offer this service. You can relax at a table or in a leather armchair and surf the Internet at your leisure. It is important to note that their wireless service is very reliable and I have yet to experience any technical difficulties while connected here. The third great thing about Modoc’s Market is all the great convenience items they offer for sale. They have fountain soda service, coolers stocked full of icy cold beverages, fresh popped popcorn, freshly roasted and salted peanuts, muffins and cookies are baked daily. As a convenience to people living in downtown Wabash, they also offer perishable and non-perishable goods to save them a trip to the large discount store.

I would suggest that if one is ever near Wabash County, they should stop by Modoc’s Market. Be sure to get a drink from the coffee bar and take home a bag of their freshly roasted coffee beans to enjoy the next morning.
