Mocktails for a Tropical-Themed Baby Shower

Whether you’re planning a festive Hawaiian luau or relaxed beach party at home, the question of what drinks to serve at a tropical theme baby shower will eventually come up. Many moms-to-be don’t want alcoholic beverages served at their baby showers, yet that is one of the very things tropical theme parties are famous for. Tropical mocktails, or non-alcoholic cocktails, are easier to make than you think. While some can be just as complex as the original versions they mock, there are many that are easy to mix in large batches that are not only tasty, but cost effective.

Virgin Colada – This one is easy to make in large amounts, and because there’s no carbonation it can be served in baby bottles or other enclosed drink containers. Put 2 parts apple juice, 1 part orange juice, and 1 part canned coconut milk in the blender and blend for 2-3 seconds; just enough to make it ‘frothy. Pour into glasses or bottles. To make it really festive make tiny flower leis on elastic cording with plastic baby charms to act as drink markers. If serving in a glass or coconut half, top with crushed coconut flakes and colorful straws.

Tamed Jungle Juice – Real jungle juice is made by throwing a bunch of whatever fruit is on hand together and letting it ferment. The trick with the tamed, non-alcoholic, version for your tropical theme baby shower is to simply not let it ferment. To get the kick your taste buds normally would from the rough alcohol, add a lemon-lime soda to the mix. If you prefer a dryer taste, use ginger ale instead. Suggested recipe: Stuff a tall glass with ice and citrus slices. In a separate glass or mixing cup, combine 3 parts orange juice, 3 parts apple juice, 1 part pineapple juice, and three parts soda. Stir gently, then pour into prepared serving glass. This can be mixed in large quantities using large mixing bowls.

Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri – This one is a little more precise, but well worth the effort. In a blender, combine 2 ounces white grape juice, 1 ounce lime juice, 1 ounce pulp-free orange juice, 1/2 teaspoon powdered sugar, 1 cup ice, and 5 large cleaned strawberries. Blend at high speed until ingredients are well mixed and ice is crushed. Serve in a Collins glass with a straw, or a baby bottle with the tip of the nipple trimmed completely off. Note: You can substitute water with a little artificial rum extract for the white grape juice if desired.

Baby Hurricane – Blow your tropical baby shower guests away with this easy recipe for a Baby Hurricane mocktail. There are lots of different recipes for Hurricanes. This one is based off the recipe known as a Category Two. Fill a hurricane glass 3/4 of the way full with ice, then pour in, in order: 1 ounce flattened Sierra Mist soda, 1 ounce ginger ale, 1 ounce white grape juice, flattened 1/2 ounce root beer, 1 ounce pulp-free orange juice, 1 ounce peach juice with two drops of almond extract mixed in, equal parts pineapple juice and grapefruit juice to fill. Top off with a hearty splash of alcohol-free grenadine.
