Men’s Fashion: Trends for Winter 2010

Men who love fashion often love winter. Winter allows men to pull out all the stops when it comes to clothing. From hats and scarves to jackets and sweaters, winter presents the stylish male with endless options. If you are a man who loves fashion, 2010 promises to be a great year. This season’s wide variety of fabrics, textures, and colors includes something for every type of taste. Here are some of the best winter trends for men in 2010.

1. Fair Isle Sweaters. Whether you are enjoying a cocktail in front of a roaring fire or strolling through the streets of SoHo, a Fair Isle sweater is an excellent choice for the stylish male. Named after a tiny island north of Scotland, these colorful patterned sweaters have been a fashion staple since the 1920s and have surged in popularity in recent years. Some of the best ones are made by Rag and Bone, Perry Ellis, and Pringle of Scotland. Avoid the cheap versions sold by Gap, Nautica, and Calvin Klein. At first glance they may look like Fair Isle, but there is nothing better than the true time-honored knitting technique. A Fair Isle sweater is like fine art; you’ll know the real thing when you see it.

2. Pea Coats. These naval-inspired heavy wool coats are a timeless classic that will never go out of style. Instead of paying top-dollar for a designer brand, shop around vintage stores. Pea coats, unlike many other garments, tend to look better with age. A pea coat purchased from a vintage clothing store will not only look better than a modern version, it will cost far less and will most likely be much better made.

3. Cable Knit Cardigans. The best cable knit cardigans are made of cashmere, which is the ultimate winter fabric. Of course, a top-quality cashmere cardigan won’t come cheap. Expect to pay anywhere between 600.00 to 2000.00 for a cable knit cardigan by Loro Piana or Bruno Cucinelli. However, if you’re a little strapped for cash this year (and who isn’t?) you might want to consider Pringle of Scotland’s cashmere cable knit sweater, practically a steal at 400.00.

These three winter trends represent the ultimate in winter style and luxury, and can be worn with everything from jeans to corduroys. Best of all, these are classics that will never go out of style.
