Meet Ms. Freddy Krueger

Maggie Hyun-Ok Roberge is a college student living in Durham, NC. She is a fangirl and loves everything Freddy Krueger. Everything except news of the new A Nightmare On Elm St. remake.

“I don’t like the fact that they have a new actor for the part of Freddy. I share this opinion with a lot of Nightmare on Elm Street fans. Without Robert Englund, it just doesn’t feel like it’s going to really be Freddy anymore.”

I asked Maggie what makes her like Freddy?

“A lot of people hated the fact that Freddy became so comical, but I actually enjoyed how witty he became. None of the other slashers I like actually talk in their movies, but Freddy’s different and a bit more original. I am DEFINITELY obsessed with Freddy. I’ve seen every movie that featured him, I’ve seen every episode of the TV show Freddy’s Nightmares, and I have a good bit of Freddy merchandise too.”

One man who has made perhaps an even bigger impact in her life than Freddy is filmmaker Chris Johnson. “I first watched his teaser (while I was) looking for Freddy videos, and I absolutely LOVED it.” (check out this amazing teaser here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxPmOP1_HIY

“So, I looked up his name on IMDB, and searched for him on Facebook. Luckily, he had a profile, so I added him as a friend and we started talking. I decided he needed to be cast as Freddy in the remake, so I made a Facebook group dedicated to him, and showed his teaser to all my friends who also love horror. Unfortunately, Chris never got cast, but when we found out that Wes Craven was upset about the movie, we decided it was better that Chris wasn’t involved. However, for all my “hard work” (I don’t think I really did much) he sent me a Freddy glove made of real metal that he made for the teaser as a thank you, and THAT is my most prized Freddy possession.”

Maggie’s love of Freddy has now been cemented in comic history. “In the newest Freddy vs Jason vs Ash comic, James Kuhoric made a little tribute to me.. Well, when we chat on Facebook, he always calls me Maggs, so in the 2nd issue, there’s actually a character named Maggie who was supposedly Freddy’s daughter in the 6th NOES movie, and one of the other characters calls her “Maggs”.

I asked Maggie what made her like serial killer slashers?

“I have no idea…However, all the slashers I like have tragic pasts, and I’ve always been a sucker for characters like that .”

Last Halloween she dressed as Ms. Freddy Krueger. This year, if you’re in North Carolina watch out, you might just run into Ms. Freddy again!
