On Sunday, November 11, New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. The score marked his seventh touchdown of the year and the 55th of his career. Colston is in his seventh season with the Saints and has already made a case to be considered the best receiver in the team’s history. At 29 years old, Colston is on his way to owning the top spot on several lists of career franchise leaders.
With his 55th touchdown, Colston tied former running back Deuce McAlister for most touchdowns in franchise history. He now trails only kickers Morten Andersen, John Carney and Doug Brien in total scoring.
As a receiver, Colston has already placed himself among the team’s top three, along with former stars Eric Martin and Joe Horn. While Colston is behind both of them in receiving yards, fewer than 1,000 yards separates the three of them at this point. If he remains healthy, Colston should be on top one year from now. Furthermore, Colston has now passed both Horn (50 touchdowns) and Martin (48 touchdowns) in scoring. His 496 receptions leave him only 27 behind Horn and 36 behind Martin.
Having the benefit of playing with quarterback Drew Brees, Colston should soon separate himself from Martin and Horn. As a Saints fan, though, I believe Colston’s role as a leader who helped this team win a Super Bowl is equally as important as his statistics. While I would like to see him post a fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season, I would rather see this year’s Saints team pull the season together and earn a postseason bid. If this happens, Colston will surely play a large part in the team’s success.
