Male Contraception: A Good Hot Bath

Male contraception is an important question raised by many men. With the condition of the economy and the structure of most of our current lifestyles it is wise to think twice about bringing children into this often unpredictable and dangerous world, male contraception can be a good idea. Some couples simply cannot afford to have another child and prefer not to use condoms or have the side effects of female contraception such as birth control pills. Most men do not like to wear condoms if they’re involved in a steady and stable relationship, so temporary male contraception can be a useful alternative to certain permanent forms of male contraception. However, most couples do not use any form of male contraception, they consider “pulling out” to be the means to an end to the problem of pregnancy; this is a very unwise and unpredictable form of male contraception.

There is a form of free male contraception available to men if you simply have a bath tub and some hot water. This form of male contraception has been around since ancient times although many do not use it, by simply not being aware of this alternative form of male contraception. A little back round on how the testes operate and how your sperm count is affected by this form of male contraception will go a long way.

These hot bath methods of male contraception derive their effectiveness from the simple fact that the testes must be a few degrees cooler than normal body temperature in order to maintain proper spermatogenesis (production of healthy sperm). Heat and the testes are closely related in the aspect of reproduction, since men with high fevers are infertile until they are well again; it has been hypothesized that newborns will then be more likely to have healthy fathers, thus increasing primal newborn survival rate by having a father that is not ill. This is just a general hypothesis on the subject related to natural selection. So, if the fact that a man is infertile in times of a fever; then what makes this male contraception possible? The body provides a cooling effect by enclosing the testes in the hanging skin of the scrotum, which is responsible for two functions; the scrotum keeps the testes outside the body wall and it creates a heat exchange between incoming and outgoing blood vessels like a heat exchanger or a radiator works in an automobile. When these two functions are impaired it results in infertility and male contraception by means of an extremely low sperm count, the heat from the hot bath literally kills the sperm.
Heat’s action on male contraception is initiated by what’s called a HSF or the heat shock factor. Cell death in the human body can be directly related to temperature, it’s commonly known that if your body gets too hot you can die (i.e. heatstroke, fever) or to cold (hypothermic shock that stops the heart) you will also die. The same is true for all cells in the human body, but some cells are more susceptible to heat and cold than others such as the case with the testes and sperm production. The heat shock factor (HSF) initiates cell death in sperm above about 95 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas in the rest of the body temperatures of about 108 degrees Fahrenheit are required to disable cells. Contrary to popular belief, men’s briefs do not raise scrotum temperatures above that threshold and thus are not a serious threat to fertility; thus being a poor form of male contraception. So don’t be fooled by the boxers vs briefs myth of male contraception. In order to kill the production of sperm one has to submerge their testes in a bath water that’s of a hot enough temperature to not burn the skin or cause extreme discomfort while at the same time being warm enough to kill sperm and be an effective form of male contraception.
In 1946 Dr. M. Voegeli , after ten years of experimentation with nine male volunteers on the subject of male contraception, he reported on this hot bath male contraception method. The method was perfectly effective and resulted in normal offspring after cessation. Voegeli’s program for temporary male contraception is as follows: “A man sits in a shallow or testes-only bath of 116 degrees Fahrenheit for forty-five minutes daily for three weeks. Six months of sterility results, after which normal fertility returns. For longer sterility, the treatment is repeated” “Water at 116˚ Fahrenheit was found to reliably produce at least six months of sterility” (Voegeli, 1956). Water at lower temperatures produced shorter periods of infertility; for example, water at 110˚ produced at least four months of infertility. Below are some guidelines for water temperature and pain induced. So, get out your thermometers out and try this proven method of temporary sterilization, for more information see the link at the end of this article.

140 degrees–commercial water heater temp. burns in 1 to 6 seconds; very painful

125 degrees–top recommended home temp. burns child in 2 minutes; painful

120 degrees–recommended home faucet temp. uncomfortable; can burn in 10 minutes

118 degrees– pain threshold for adults

116 degrees–testes-only bath for contraception very hot but not painful

110 degrees–hot shower very warm but not hot

105 degrees–maximum tolerable bath temp. warm

101 degrees–comfortable bath or hot-tub temp. warm
