Making Wine Glass Charms: A Unique, Useful Party Favor

While trying to decide on a favor for the guests of our recent party, I was trying to think of something the guests would actually appreciate. At most parties or weddings, guests receive candy of some sort in an organza or tulle pouch. That was my first thought. But as a guest of such parties, I was disappointed to receive it, because it was neither healthy nor useful.

What could I possibly make that guests could take home and use over and over again, yet be something as elegant as the party we were throwing? Then I saw those plastic champagne flutes people get for parties. That gave me my first idea to use those glasses instead of tulle pouches. Then I saw clear plastic wine goblets. The thoughts in my head were coming together beautifully! Why not make wine glass charms for those, fill them with candy or whatever, and let THAT be the party favor?!

First, decide on what you want your wine glass charm to look like. For our party, I chose brightly colored glass beads and novelty beads shaped like various cocktails. With so many choices of novelty beads out there, you can choose any theme you want. If you can’t seem to find just the right novelty beads for your occasion, just get some really pretty glass beads in various sizes. Use seed beads or some other smaller bead to fill in the rest of the ring.

Other things you will need to make your wine glass charms are charm rings, which can be found at most craft stores or online, headpins or beading wire, and pliers. You can also use rondelles between beads if you like.

If you have chosen to use some novelty beads as charm pieces, you will need to put them on headpins or beading wire so you can attach them to the charm ring. If you choose to use glass beads, you will need to create a dangle charm. To do this, string a few beads on a headpin or piece of beading wire. Using your pliers, bend the excess wire to create a loop at the top and twist it to secure. Trim off the remaining wire and pinch the tip to secure.

One thing to keep in mind when creating charms is that you want them to be color coordinated yet different so that users can tell which is theirs.

Now you can begin to assemble your wine glass charms. Using pliers, straighten one end of the charm ring. Add a few plain beads and then a dangle charm. Repeat until you get your desired look. For mine, I used one dangle charm and lots of plain beads in between. Once you have all of your beads and dangle charms on the ring, bend it back into its original position.

Attach these to plastic wine goblets and fill with whatever you like. Set them out on a fancy tray and you will have a very elegant and useful party favor that your guests will definitely remember!
