Make Your Own Clown Beanbag Game

I created this clown themed beanbag toss game for a party and the kids have enjoyed playing with it ever since. It’s a fun project that your children can help create. Here is how to make one.

The beanbag game is made in two parts, the beanbags themselves and the clown face to be the target.

Making the Target ~
We made our target out of an empty box about eighteen inches square. On the front side of it we cut out two circles to be the clown’s eyes, a triangle to be his nose, and an oval (tilted on it’s side and twisted up on the corners just a bit) to be his open-mouthed smile. You can cut the holes on your game in any pattern you like. Our party theme was clowns so we made ours look like a clown face.

After you choose your pattern of holes and you cut them from your box you can paint the rest of the box to match your party’s theme. We added red paint around the clown’s mouth to accent his smile, accents of blue paint to make his eyes blue, and then painted a circle around his triangle nose to give him a big traditionally red nose. Then we gave him big ears painted on the sides of the box. On the day of the party we added a clean mop head to the top of him just for decoration. (After the party I got my mop head back!)

Making the Bean Bags ~
To make the bean bags for your bean bag toss game, you will start with fabric. You will need two squares of fabric for each bean bag. If the two pieces of fabric are the same print, then your bean bag will be the same on both sides. If you want to, you can use two different fabrics for each bean bag and have it different on each side.

We started with pieces of fabric that were eight inches by six inches. I found a fabric that had a pattern of clown heads on it for ours. You may be able to find a fabric that coordinates with the theme on your box or you may just choose colors that you like.

For each bean bag, place two pieces of fabric together with the ‘good’ side towards the middle. Stitch around the bean bag, about half an inch in from the edges, almost all the way around. Leave open an inch or so gap, so that you can turn them right side out. After you turn them right side out use that hole to fill up your bean bags. For the size we used we used about a cup of dry beans for each one. You could also add a cup of dry rice if you would rather not use beans.

Once your bean bag is full stitch that last inch or so opening closed so the beans don’t spill out. The sizes we gave, one cup of filling and eight by six inches of fabric, worked well for us. If you make your bean bags smaller or larger that this you may have to alter the amount of beans that you pour into each one.
