Letter of Intent: How to Write for Success

The main purpose of a a letter of intent is to make yourself as appealing as possible when applying somewhere. Knowing exactly how to write a letter of intent is very important for young people who want to attend grad school, university, or gain an internship opportunity with some business. good letter of intent could be compared to a perfect sales pitch. You must be willing to market yourself and your skills.

After having carefully thought out what your future career interests and aspirations are, you can start choosing out the rights schools. Once you have figured out the possible candidates for you future studies, you have go to start selling your. For this purpose, a well-written the letter of intent is invaluable.

Let us get down to business: how to write a letter of intent?

First, You must find out the name of person of the person who will be receiving and reviewing your letter of intent. Make sure you do not address your letter of intent to “To Whom it May Concern,” as so many people mistakenly do. You cannot be sure that the person you have in mind, will receive your letter of intent, if you do not properly address it. The best way to go about this, would be to call the school to find out this information.

Secondly, the letter of intent should be written in business format. This cannot be in a format that you would send a letter to your friend. It would be advisable to use Times New Roman as your font, and 12pt as the font size.

Thirdly, the first paragraph of the letter of intent should be focused on introducing yourself to the reader. Be sure to mention the following: your current school and in which year you started. Extra-curricular information is always a plus in your letter of intent. If you play sports, be sure that you specifically describe what you do, maybe you are football captain or do something else, do not forget to mention this in your letter of intent.

Next step would be to give the purpose of your letter of intent. Give information on how first found out about the program or school that you are applying for. Be sure to mention how excited you are about the program or studying opportunity in your letter of intent.

After stating everything above, it would be appropriate to give the reason why you are writing. You must bring out the reason, why you and you only are the right person for the class or school. You could write it out as a list of your achievements or characteristics.

Now, compliment the class or school you are applying for in a sincere way. Be sure not to overdo it, as it may appear that you are lying just to look good. Be honest and provide them with the list of reasons why you have chosen their school or program.

Say that you are looking forward to hearing from them. Do not forget to include your contact information, so they could easily contact you, if they wish to interview you.

The letter should be ended with a “Yours sincerely”, and your signature. It would be a advisable to keep the length under one page. Proofread the letter before sending it, let someone else proofread it, because it is difficult to see your own mistakes. Typos can make you look bad.

In conclusion, always make an extra copy of your letter, in case it gets lost in the mail. As unlikely as it might seem, it happens once in a while, and you’d hate to start from the scratch, wouldn’t you?
