Κερασιά Μαγνησίας

In the southeast of the lake Karla, we find its smallest village, Kerasia. Kerasia is built at the foot of North West Pelion. At the centre of the village, there is a large square, where beautiful traditional festivals take place (29-30 June), as well as many cultural events organized by the Municipality.

As we move on to the cobbled path, we reach the arched bridge leading to the church of Agios Nikolaos (protector of the village).

On the main road to Kanalia and on our right, we find the Mountainous North Pelion Information Centre, operating since 2001 where visitors can receive information on the flora and fauna of the region. The visitor also has the chance to visit a lot of beautiful chapels.

At the end of the village, the road will lead us to Ano Kerasia, a village of memories, legends, a historical village. At the entrance of the village, the monument of National Resistance and the house ruins are witnesses of the disaster that took place in 1944 by the German occupation troops. There are also a lot of chapels here. In the amphitheatrical square, there is the central church of Saint Apostles. Next to that the burnt school and the open area called “tsairi” remind of the good old days.

All around there are mountains with beeches, oaks, chestnut trees and from here the roads lead to Veneto, to the Monastery of Flamouri (celebrating on the 6th August) and Pouri, which are ideal for walkers and nature lovers.

Municipal Department of Kanalia

Kanalia is a village built amphitheatrically at the foot of Mavrovouni at an altitude of 80m. To the west the pine-clad hill named “Koutria” with the church of Agios Nektarios offers visitors a chance for recreation. In 1883 Kanalia was established as the capital of the Municipality of Voeve. On the central road we come across the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary (protector of the village) with the wonder-working icon of Virgin Mary of Kanalia where a traditional celebration takes place on the 15thof August. The EcclesiasticalMuseum operates in the same location. Next to that are found the “Sourligkeio Foundation”, the Nursing Home and the Cultural Centre. The Byzantine Architecture is represented by the Church of Agios Nikolaos. Pelion architecture is encountered in “LioliosTower” and “Veri’s Mansion”.

Two frescos with themes inspired by Lake Karla decorate A. Bellou’s shop (Rozario).

The two fish shacks on the left of the square, a boat and some fishing tools are reminders of a lost civilization. The extensive cultivation of almond-trees justifies the existence of three small industries in the field of nut processing.

Municipal Department of  Stefanovikeio

In the village centre, we come across the green village square. In the area around the square are located the Town Hall, the Elementary School, the Kindergarten, as well as ouzeries (fish restaurants serving ouzo), taverns and cafes. The main church of the village is the Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus (celebrating on the 6th of August with a traditional feast). In the southwest of the village there is a small park. As we continue, we find the Chapel of Saint Athanasios. We can also visit the small folklore museum located in the premises of the Elementary School, the outdoor museum of Karla next to the Town Hall and in the southeast side of the village we can enjoy the green scenery and fresh air in the small park of “Stefanos Akrivousis”.

On the road to Kanalia, we come across the heliport of Stefanovikeio. As we continue our route to the village Megalo Monastiri of the Prefecture of Larisa, we reach the chapel of the Ascension of Christ or Karagatsi that was named after the age-old tree “karagatsi” found in the courtyard of the chapel. According to a local story holy water spouts from the tree hollow and every year the faithful hang pieces of cloth on the tree praying for the protection of their health. Remains from old settlements were found in the locations “Magoula” & “Petra”, 4 km from the last houses of the village towards Karla.

Municipal Department of Rizomylos

Rizomylos is a village located in the heart of the plain. Historically the creation of the settlement dates back 3 centuries. The village is inhabited by the locals named “Karagounides” and since 1910 refugees from East Romylia have also been settled in the region. Rizomylos is well known for its taverns, traditional fish restaurants serving ouzo (ouzeries) and cafes located in beautiful spots, such as the village central square.
An important celebration for the village is the date of the Translation of Saint Athanasios Relics (2 May) which takes place each year with a traditional feast.
