Think Canada, America’s north of the border neighbor, and you don’t usually muse music. You may mentally list ice hockey, maple syrup or bitter cold, even icy weather and snow, but fact is some of music’s biggest recording artists all hail from Canada. From the teen sensation of Justin Bieber (Baby) to the pop diva delight of Celine Dion (My Heart Will Go On), Canada is a lot more musical than many of us normally think.
Justin Bieber – London, Ontario Canada
Depending on your age, he’s the coolest, sweetest singing cat this side of global pop music, or he befuddles you as sort of a weirdly unfathomable dude. Still, it can’t be denied that this 18 year old singer and musician is fantastically successful and talented. Bieber is truly a symbol of the viral power of the internet – most specifically YouTube. The doe eyed Canuck divo was discovered when talent agent Scooter Braun saw his music videos on YouTube. Since then, Justin Bieber has sold millions of songs, become a household name – amassed a severely loyal community of fans called ‘Beliebers’ – and his Twitter following is a massive 20 million followers.
Celine Dion – Charlemagne, Quebc Canada
She’s the Canadian pop diva with the ultra sultry, haunting singing voice, and she speaks with a pleasant, if somewhat hyperactive French Canadian accent. Dion first won acclaim and fame by scoring prime victory in singing contests – winning both the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest and the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival. Dion’s musical accomplishments are record breaking indeed; she’s the best selling Candian artist of all time, she released the best selling French language album, D’eux, of all time and in 2004 she was given the Chopard Diamond Award for becomming the best selling female artist ever.
Michael Buble – Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
He’s the smooth as silk Canadian crooner who also holds dual citizenship – as he’s also a legal citizen of Italy. Buble’s retro vocal style mixes music from so many eras, it’s hard to keep track, but much of his chart success comes from covers of well known standards like, “Fever”, “For Once In My Life” and “The Way You Look Tonight”. Despite his singing prowess, his passion for another activity, ice hockey, runs deep, but yet Buble freely admits he doesn’t have quite the talent necessary for the demanding sport, saying, “If I was any good at hockey, I probably wouldn’t be singing right now.
