The Hollywood Foreign Press awarded Jodie Foster with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 70th Annual Golden Globes Awards on Jan. 13. The actress, who has been involved in show business for almost 50 years now, delivered an amazing speech while accepting the award and talked about how hard it is to grow up in Hollywood, where all the eyes of the world are always on you.
Here is a look at the amazing career of Jodie Foster after her special presentation.
While Foster has been acting since she was a toddler, she took the world by storm at the age of 14 when she starred as a teenage prostitute in Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver.” The role was daring, and thanks to her age, infamous. However, it was also an amazing performance by the young talent, who picked up an Oscar nomination for the role. Luckily, unlike many young child stars, she kept her head on straight and the future was very bright.
“Freaky Friday”
The Golden Globes also recognized her for her teenage performances, as they awarded her a nomination the same year as her Oscar nom for a very different role. Foster starred in “Freaky Friday,” a body swapping tale, where her character swaps bodies with her mother (Barbara Harris), and the two discover how difficult the other’s life really is. To see how impressive Foster’s career is, Lindsay Lohan starred in the remake, with the polar opposite career trajectory from Foster.
It was 15 years after Foster picked up the Oscar nomination for playing a child prostitute that she won her second Oscar for playing an FBI agent in “Silence of the Lambs.” Foster won an Oscar three years before for “The Accused,” but was at the top of the world with the Jonathan Demme movie. The police thriller about a cannibalistic serial killer picked up five Oscar wins in seven nominations, almost unheard of for a genre movie.
“Home for the Holidays”
In her acceptance speech, Foster made hints that her days of acting might be coming to a close, but she sounds like she plans on directing a lot of movies in the future, and said that she doesn’t care if they are wide releases or small independent features. She made her directorial debut with “Little Man Tate” in 1991 and then had a big success with “Home for the Holidays” in 1995. It was in that movie that she worked with Robert Downey Jr., the man who introduced her at the 70th Annual Golden Globes, and it was there she proved she has the talent to have a very long career in Hollywood, even if she never steps in front of the camera again.
