Jergens Newest Lotions Review

Now I will admit it takes a lot to impress me with body lotion. I’ve tried hundreds. I tend to be biased against drugstore body lotion. They often smell too strong and don’t seem to work for very well. I am, however, on a tight budget and it would be a wonderful find to uncover a diamond in the rough.

Skin Smoothing Cellular Renewal Moisturizer “with gentle exfoliating beads, natural fruit acids & vital hydrators.”

Truly I thought I would like this one best. I have keratosis pilaris (“chicken skin”, or small reddish bumps, over a large part of my body) and exfoliating lotions are the only ones that seem to help. This lotion went on very silky (thanks to the jojoba esters), and had very little fragrance, but didn’t leave much moisture on the skin once it was absorbed. For people who want help with uneven texture (though the fruit acids listed aren’t my favorite ingredients for that job) but don’t have overly dry skin, this would be a good choice. It did leave a silky feel, but it just wasn’t nearly moisturizing enough to impress me.

From the package:
Exfoliates & Renews
Moisturize into silky skin.

Made with natural fruit acids from pineapple, lemon and grapefruit and beads of jojoba oil, know to help renew and rejuvenate skin.

Ingredients:
Water, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Petrolatum, Behentrimonium Chloride, Isopropyl Isostearate, Lactamide MEA, Jojoba Esters, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tridecyl Salicylate, Citrus Medica Lemonum (lemon) Juice, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Juice, Citrus Grandus (grapefruit) juice, Dimethicone, Dicaprylyl Ether, Glyceryl Dilaurate, Lactose, Cellulose, Hydroxypropyl Methycellulose, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance, Talc, Titanium Dioxide, Red 30, Ferric Ferrocyanide, Ultramarines

Shea Butter Skin Enriching Moisturizer
“with pure African Shea Butter, a natural source of antioxidants & vitamins.”

(“And this one was too moisturizing,” said Goldilocks).

Shea butter and other tropical and fruit butters are very popular for good reason – they do work. I might have given this more of a try when the cold weather it and my skin truly dried out, if it weren’t for the fragrance. This didn’t smell exotic and tropical as much as the way “tropical” flavored candy smells. It was too sweet, too cloying and smelled like old candy on my skin. So even if the lotion hadn’t felt much too greasy, I still wouldn’t have been able to recommend it. I do give credit for Jergens actually making shea butter the 2nd ingredient though. The petrolatum and urea are still doing most of the hard work though when it comes to really softening the driest skin. My recommendation: smell it first. If you can tolerate the smell this is a good choice for severely dry skin.

From the package:

Ultra Healing Extra dry skin moisturizer
“with moisture retaining lipids for 24-hour hydration.”
(and this one was just right!)

This lotion fell right in between the first two I tried. Not too greasy and not too light. It had a lasting effect not only on the dryness of my skin but also on the smoothing of the texture (of the keratosis pilaris affected areas.) I was very impressed with the cumulative effect of the lotion as I used it over time. This really did give my skin more radiance – the kind that comes from deeply hydrated, smooth skin. The scent was minimal and undetectable after a few minutes. I could even apply this on freshly shaved legs without stinging. Though the ingredient list doesn’t have anything too exotic or exciting (and the allantoin is near the bottom of the list – far too little to be very healing) – the ingredients that are there do a wonderful job.

From the package:
Heals & Softens
Moisturize into deeply hydrated skin.

Irresistibly soft, invitingly smooth skin is the palm of your hand. Let the nourishing formula of Jergens® Ultra Healing® Extra dry skin moisturizer take even your roughest spots-heels, elbows, and knees – from a state of extreme dryness to a state of lasting softness. This fast-absorbing body lotion goes deep beneath skin’s surface to lock in moisture for 24 hours of relief. With continued use, it actually triples skin’s moisture content, healing dryness at the source to prevent its unwelcome return.

Made with moisture-retaining lipids to lock in moisture and Allantoin, known to help heal dry skin.
