Here are 5 light displays and holiday events that you should try to see this holiday season.
What: “Winter Wonderland” & “Winter Break”
Where: The Jacksonville Zoo. During select nights during the holidays, the Jacksonville Zoo is open and illuminated by millions lights. Beginning December 26, Jacksonville Zoo also holds “Winter Break”, and event that includes music from around the world as well as other fun activities and holiday attractions. These events are free with the cost of a regular zoo admission.
When: The dates of “Winter Wonderland” vary every year. Check the Jacksonville Zoo for the most current dates and times. “Winter Break” begins December 26 and runs through January 1. Holidays hours at the zoo are from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
How: The best way to view is with an admission to the zoo. Zoo admission is $12.00 for adults, senior citizen admission price is $10.00, and children 3-12 are $7.50. Admission is free for children under 3.
Why: Because you can see beautiful displays of holiday lighting and decorations, enjoy great festival activities, and visit the zoo at the same time.
What: “Annual Tree Lighting”, “City of Jacksonville’s Light Boat Parade”, and “Annual Tuba Christmas” at The Jacksonville Landing
Where: The Jacksonville Landing at 2 Independent Drive, Jacksonville, FL. The Jacksonville Landing is the heart of Jacksonville and is located downtown on the St. Johns River.
When: The Annual Tree Lighting takes place on November 23 at 7 pm. This commemorates the official start of the holiday season in Jacksonville. On November 24, make plans to be at The Landing for the City of Jacksonville’s Light Boat Parade. This event begins at 7 pm and includes many boats decorated for the holidays parading down the river. The biggest fireworks show of the year follows shortly after the last boat goes by! Annual Tuba Christmas is held on December 8 and more than one hundred tubas played in front of The Landing’s Christmas tree.
How: You can view these festivities from either of The Landing’s river walks. There is no admission charge.
Why: Averaging between 50 and 60 feet in height, the Jacksonville Landing Christmas tree, on the river Downtown, is the city’s tallest and “official” Christmas tree. The first official lighting is accompanied by live holiday music and fireworks. The annual Jacksonville Light Parade brings thousands of spectators The Landing. More fireworks are launched at the conclusion of the parade.
