A bedroom with a very low ceiling might seem to have limited possibilities. However, it can be just as stylish and accommodating as the rest of the home. If the windows are small, the room might be darker than desired. Painting, decorating and furnishing techniques can be used to make a low bedroom ceiling appear higher while making the entire room appear lighter and brighter.

Several years ago I dated a man that had a remodeling business. He began by remodeling his nineteenth century home. The downstairs had two bedrooms. He transformed the smallest bedroom into an office and the other one into a laundry room. The upstairs attic was remodeled to create two large bedrooms. Because the upstairs was an attic, the ceilings were very low. I came up with several decorating techniques that would draw attention away from the very low ceiling of his bedroom while enhancing the style and the beauty of the space.

Paint the Walls and Ceiling White or a Light Color

The walls have more square footage than any other surface in a bedroom, and color can have a huge impact on the room. A well chosen color can visually raise a low ceiling and widen a small room. Select one of countless shades of white or a very light color before decorating any other part of the room. A low ceiling can also be painted a bright shade of flat white, and the walls can be coated in a light satin hue. If the bedroom is dark, light paint will transform it from dismal to bright.

Install a Fan and Light Fixture that Hugs the Ceiling

It is possible to have a ceiling fan with a light fixture in a bedroom with a very low ceiling. Buy a fan and light fixture combo that hugs the ceiling, and do not skimp on style. Purchase a high quality fan and fixture set. It will run more smoothly, operate more efficiently and it will add comfort and style to the bedroom throughout the year.

Cover the Windows with Adjustable Blinds and Sheers

When a bedroom has a low ceiling, do not make the room dark by keeping the blinds closed during daylight hours and covering the windows with heavy drapes. Opt for vertical or horizontal privacy blinds that easily open and close when decorating the space, and select light sheers instead of dark or thick drapes. Otherwise, select lightweight window treatments with vertical stripes. The stripes will provide an illusion of height, even if the ceiling is very low.

Decorating with Low Profile Bedroom Furnishings

Oversized furnishings can swallow up a bedroom with a low ceiling. Instead of selecting high chests of drawers and a bed with a huge headboard when decorating the space, choose low profile furnishings. Consider removing the headboard, and replace it with a work of art that has vertical designs. It will also lend an illusion of height to a bedroom with a very low ceiling.
