Ideas for Color Block Living Room Decorating

Color block designs are nothing new, especially in the world of style. Fashion designers often use it in clothing designs, but they are not the only stylists that implement this creative technique. Interior designers also use color block arrangements that are eye catching and incredibly unique. They often begin in the living room and use the same technique throughout the home. The living room is a great place to use various hues on all levels. They can be bold or muted, but in any case they can look absolutely terrific.

I designed my last living room with color block decor. From the floor to the ceiling, right angles in varying shades of green were used when decorating the space. The client had a muted brown sofa in a neutral living room, and the color block decor made it pop in amazing new ways. We went on a shopping trip in Orland Park Illinois, and we came home with a truckload of new living room accessories and a fabulous piece of furniture that became the inspiration for the rest of the space.

Begin with a Living Room Ottoman or Stool in a Solid Hue

My client and I headed for her favorite home furnishing store upon arriving in Orland Park. She was drawn to a beautiful square lime green ottoman, and I thought that it was the perfect piece for her living room. It would become the inspiration for the color block design in the rest of the living room. It brought her neutral furnishings to life, and it instantly added vibrancy to an otherwise drab and uninspiring space.

Select Furniture Throw Pillows in the Same Color Family

Our next stop was the throw pillow department. Her sofa was accessorized with pillows that were covered in the same colorless upholstery as the sofa. I found a rack of gorgeous green throw pillows in three different shades, and they were ideal. We could not have found a better trio of pillows for the color block design.

When decorating with a color block technique in a living room, the main hue of choice does not have to remain exactly the same. Stay within the same color family, but opt for various shades of the same eye catching hue to achieve the greatest impact. We chose an emerald green pillow, a lime green pillow and one that was celery green. The rectangular throw pillows placed along the back of the seating area were phenomenal.

Add the Finishing Touches

I finished the color block design job with the addition of three gorgeous coffee table books. They were various shades of green, and they beautifully reflected the colors of the throw pillows that embellished the sofa. The appearance of the books was far more interesting than the titles.

I was not quite finished with the living room decorating scheme. We also added a color block design to the upper portion of the living room. My client loved plants, and I selected a tall vibrant green rubber tree plant that extended from the glazed tan pot to the sharply angled ceiling. It provided an upper level focal point, and although it did not have the ninety degree angles of the other decor, it added to the beautiful green color scheme.
