Hula Hoop Party Table Decoration

Got an old hula hoop lying in the basement or garage? There are many ways to recycle a hula hoop including making a play center for a pet or turning the hoop into a giant photo frame. There’s yet another way to use that old hula hoop – make a party decoration! No matter if it’s a holiday, a graduation, or another event, it’s easy to turn a hula hoop into a magnificent decoration to hang over a table.

Screw a “c” hook into the ceiling, directly over the desired table, and use it to hang the hoop. First, wrap the hula hoop in fabric strips, wide ribbon, strips of lace or even crepe paper. Crepe paper is really cheap and comes in a variety of colors. It looks great at nearly any party and can be used to quickly wrap the hula hoop.

No matter what type of material you’re using to wrap the hoop, tape the end, wrap the entire hoop, and tape the opposite end. When you get to the end of the material, just tape that end, position another piece, and tape it in place. Continue wrapping until the hoop is completely covered. Wrapping the hula hoop is optional, and for some swag decorations, it isn’t necessary.

Take three long ribbons, rope pieces or twine pieces and use them to suspend the hula hoop. Cut all three pieces the same size – twice as long as needed to reach from the ceiling to the place above the table. Take one piece of the twine, put one end through the hoop, then bring the ends together. Tie them in a knot. Do this to all three cords and space them evenly around the hula hoop. Hang the knotted areas on the “c” hook over the table.

Decide what you want to hang over the edges of the hula hoop. It can be lengths of crepe paper, wide or narrow ribbon pieces, yarn, tinsel or other material. Cut the pieces then hang them over the hoop so that one end hangs through the hoop and the opposite end hangs outside of the hoop. Cut these all to the same length or cut different lengths to create the swag you want.

You can knot the chosen materials onto the hoop and there will be no need for you to cover the hula hoop first. To do this, fold the piece in half, then place the folded area of the ribbon or other material under the hoop. Place it so that the fold faces you, take the ends of the ribbon, and push them through the hole formed by the loop. Pull the ends tight and the material is then knotted onto the hoop. Make many of these, tie them on, then butt them together.

The hanging ribbon, twine, crepe paper or other materials look fabulous hanging over the top of the party table. It’s easy to create specific themes by the materials you use and the colors you combine. It’s a fun way to use an old hula hoop, and when the party is over, unwrap the hoop and create something new for the next special occasion!
