How to Write a Children’s Fiction Novel

Maybe you’ve read Harry Potter. Or maybe you’ve dabbled in other such fantastic stories of great wonder, magic, and excitement. Maybe you yourself have been considering writing a children’s novel. If such is the case, the following are some suggestions on how you might do so.

Keep it Simple

Children are children. They don’t like things too complicated. Therefore, when thinking of an idea of what to write for your novel, keep the target demographic of your book in mind at all times.

Characters

Characters can either make or break your story. If the characters are really catchy and stand out a bit, you might have a chance of actually expanding your book to Harry Potter status.

Characters are the life-blood of your novel. Make them interesting, lively, and very distinct. Make the characters almost alive. Write about them in such a way that will cause your young readers to be able to visualize just exactly how the character might look, act, and sound.

Characters of the morally “good” variety shouldn’t be dark. They should be the example of all that is right. Characters of the morally “bad” variety should be sinister to the core. A good villain is key to the success of your story. Just look at what good Darth Vader did for George Lucas’ “Star Wars”.

Environments

Make sure when describing the various environments in your story that you use as lively and as imaginative detail as possible. Write about the places in your book in such a way that it will literally cause your readers to be pulled into the world that you have envisioned. Let them see all of the sights. Let them hear all of the sounds. Let them smell all of the smells. Make it as real as possible and leave no detail behind!

Climax

Make the climax of your book as juicy as possible. Again, remember that children are your readers so don’t write anything that is too over the top. If the story takes a turn for the worse, throw in some humor every once in a while to keep things light.

Possibilities of a Sequel

Even if you aren’t considering writing a sequel to your book, write it in such a way that a second book might someday be possible. You never know with these things. If your book becomes popular enough, you might change your mind and decide to continue writing about whatever it is that you came up with.
