How to Use a Breast Pump Effectively

When you are breastfeeding your baby and decide to use a breast pump for the first time, it can be quite intimidating. Not only are there many different brands to buy, but you may not be sure how to use this strange looking contraption correctly. The first few times that you pump, you may be disappointed to find only a few drops come out of your breasts. Don’t be discouraged if this happens to you. There are several things that you can do in order to pump effectively.

Getting Ready

Your first step when breast pumping is to get everything you need ready. Set up your pump by following the enclosed directions, find a comfortable and private area to pump and bring something to do to keep you occupied while you pump. Before you begin, it is important to take the time to massage your breasts. If you massage and also think of your baby, this will help with the let down process. To properly massage, begin at the top of your breasts and work your way down to the nipple in a spiral pattern. Additionally, before you begin pumping, you should drink plenty of water. Pumping can take a lot out of you, so it is important that you stay hydrated.

Avoid Common Mistakes

There are frequent mistakes that women make while using a breast pump. Incorrect posture is one common error. While you are pumping, it is important that you lean your body forward. This will help the milk flow down easier and will also prevent you from leaking on your clothes. Using the wrong settings on an electric pump is another thing that you should try to avoid. If the suction is too high, you are going to end up with uncomfortable sore nipples. Placing your nipple directly in the center of the suction cups will stop sore nipples as well. If you do suffer from sore nipples from pumping, there are creams that you can use to ease the tenderness. Another issue that some women face is that they stop pumping if they do not feel as though they are producing enough milk. If this is the first time that you have pumped, do not expect to fill a bottle with milk. Your milk may not have come in yet, especially if you begin to pump right after your baby is born.

Pumping the Most Milk

By pumping often, you can ensure to get the most milk at each sitting. Many women find that they produce more milk if they use their breast pump as often as they nurse their baby. If your baby eats every three to four hours, then try and pump during these intervals. The time of day that you pump can also make a difference. Usually, the early morning hours will produce the most milk. Many women try and pump at least twice in the morning in order to effectively build up their supply. The type of pump that you use will also decide how well you are pumping. Double electric pumps are by far the most effective pump that you can use. Your body produces more milk when both breasts are being pumped simultaneously. The brand of pump can also make a big difference. If you have access to a hospital grade electric pump, then that is the best one to use. Don’t worry about having too much milk. Breast milk can be frozen and used months later.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for women to always be available to nurse their babies. A breast pump allows us to provide milk for our babies when we are not there. This is why it is important to make an effort to use your breast pump in the most effective way possible.
