How to Say Common Expressions in Spanish

You do not need to know much Spanish, to able to say a few simple expressions such as I am hungry, or I am cold, or I am sleepy. The equation is very simple and anyone can learn it, below I will show you how to form simple expressions in Spanish.

The first step is to know what the verb tener means, the verb tener means to have, but it could also be used to describe a feeling when used in certain expressions it will translate to mean I am…

The second is to know how to conjugate the verb tener to the first person form which means you will need to change the verb form of tener so that it agrees with the first person and here is how to do that,

In Spanish the first person is called Yo, (in English it translates to I) you will need to use Yo to express how you are feeling, now to make sure the subject (Yo) agrees with the verb you will have to change tener to tengo. Tengo is the appropriate ending of the verb in first person form, when used with an expression. It will translate to I am … Tengo is pronounced as (tane-go)

Third, you need to know the equation to use, to form expressions, the equation is, tener + the adjective such as tener + cold

Fourth you will need to learn the Spanish equivalent for the following adjectives, hungry, tired, scared, hot, thirsty, hungry, in a hurry, and scared and they are as followed;

Hungry – Hambre (pronounced like ahmbrey)
Sleepy – Sueno (prounced like Swayne-yo)
Scared – Miedo (pronounced like mee-ed-oh)
Hot – Calor (pronounced like Kah-loor)
Thirsty – Sed (Pronounced like said)
In a hurry – Prisa (Pronounced lika pree-sa)
Cold- Frio (Pronounced like free-yo)

Now you are ready to form an expression, the first expression will be -I am hungry, to say this in Spanish we must remember to follow the equation (tener + the adjective which in this case is hungry) so we must first change tener to tengo which is the appropriate verb form used to express how you feel, next you then want to pair the verb tengo with the Spanish adjective for hungry which is hombre, so together you have, tengo hambre which means I am hungry. Now we will follow the same equation to express I am sleepy in Spanish. First, we must remember to follow the equation (tener + the adjective, which in this case is sleepy) so we need to change tener to tengo to express how you feel, and then you must pair it with the Spanish adjective for sleepy which is sueno, so together you have tengo sueno, which means I am sleepy.

Here is how to say the following expressions in Spanish; Remember tengo is pronounced as (tane-go)

I am scared – tengo miedo
I am hot – tengo calor
