How to Remove a Broken Bolt

As the summer gets a little closer, there are many outdoor home improvement projects you might be thinking of doing this year. Every time you start a home improvement project there is the ability for something to go wrong, like a bolt getting broken. If you are having an issue with a broken bolt there is a very simple and easy way to remove the broken bolt without breaking the bank.

The first thing you should do if you have a broken bolt is to gather essential materials needed to remove the broken bolt. Some of the items you might need include a drill, drill bits, magnet, compressed air, bolt extractor and a toothbrush. You can get all of these items at your local home improvement store or retail store for about 30 dollars. Removing a broken bolt is also a very time-consuming and delicate process so you want to be relaxed and well-rested while you try to remove the broken bolt.

After you have gathered all your tools you are going to need, you can then drill a small hole into the bolt that is broken. This should be done using a very small drill bit so that you do not crack the broken bolt or mess up the surrounding materials. The drill bit should be correctly lined up with the center of the drill to ensure your safety and the safety of the broken bolt.

There should now be a small hole in the center of the broken bolt where you can place an extracting bit. The extracting bit should be placed into the hole and the vise grip should be holding the end of the bolt. You need to have firm pressure to the bit as you turn the broken bolt from left to right so that the extracting bit sets into the bolt.

When you start turning the extracting bit, it should begin to attach onto the broken bolt so you can slowly pull it out. The extraction part might take some time and patience because you have to slowly turn the extracting bit making sure the bolt stays attached. You should then reach a point where you have used the extraction bit enough that you can just grab the broken bolt right out of the hole.

Once the broken bolt is removed, you can use the magnet to make sure there are no metal pieces on the inside of the hole. Leaving metal pieces inside the hole where the broken bolt was could damage the threads and make putting a new bolt in very hard. You can use the toothbrush or compressed air to make sure there are no other metal pieces around the inside of the hole to make sure. This is a very easy and simple way to get a broken bolt out of a hole without spending a lot of money doing it.
