How to Make Your Own Gourmet Salt Scrub

Grapeseed, Peppermint Essential Oil, Salt Scrub

Salt scrub, or body scrub, is a wonder treatment for dry and damaged skin, callused and peeling feet, and cracked and painful hands. This is why people all across the world purchase expensive tubs of salt scrub without a second thought. What they don’t realize is that salt scrub is extremely easy and inexpensive to make. With the recipe below, you can make your own salt scrub and luxuriate daily in your renewed and healthy skin!

Choice of Oil

Salt Scrubs can be made with a variety of different oils, depending on your preference and budget. It is recommended to use two different oils when making your salt scrub to give your skin a more well-rounded clean relief. Grapeseed, safflower, and sunflower oils are perfect for salt scrub-without a strong smell, they will lightly moisturize your body without leaving you feeling guilty. Grapeseed, safflower, and sunflower oils are all fairly inexpensive oils, especially if bought it large quantities. You can also supplement this oil with a more expensive oil such as almond, walnut, avocado, or jojoba. These oils generally come in smaller containers and cost more, but are really luxurious on the skin. It is not recommended that you use olive oil when making your salt scrub because of both its strong smell and heavy nature. Also not recommended is mineral oil, as it can be pore-clogging, causing body irritation and acne.

Choice of Salt

The type of salt you choose is really a personal decision, but it is recommended that you utilize several different types of salt. Rough sea salt is great for exfoliating, but can be too tough on the skin when used alone. Kosher salt, Epsom salt, Redman’s mineral salt, or table salt can also be used in different qualities if desired. I recommend you experiment a bit with different types of salt until you find a ratio that feels the most refreshing on your skin.

Choice of
Essential Oil

Essential Oil is what will give your salt scrub its distinct smell, so the choice is really up to you, the maker. Essential oils can be bought at many natural grocery stores and comes in small eye-drop bottles. Essential oils are expensive, so I recommend choosing one or two only, unless you want to break the bank. Peppermint essential oil is amazingly refreshing and lavender is very luxurious-just to name two favorite choices.

Salt Scrub Recipe

When following this recipe, know that you can easily manipulate it to suit your own preference-you can easily add more rough salt, add more essential oils, or exchange the choice of vegetable oil. Feel free to experiment on your own as this recipe is just meant to be a starting point for you.

2 cups rough sea salt

2 cups medium-fine sea salt

½ cup Redman’s mineral salt

3 cups grapeseed oil

1 cup almond oil

5 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Pour all of the above ingredients in a nice glass jar and stir carefully with a wooden spoon. Make sure that all of the salt gets integrated into the oil. Top of with extra oil or salt if mixture seems too oily or too rough. If you desire, label the jar with the ingredients for your own reference.

Salt scrubs make perfect gifts for friends and family because they seem so professional. If you are giving the salt scrub as a gift, wrap a nice ribbon around the top of the glass jar and label the salt scrub with its ingredients in case your friend has an allergy to the oil you used. Make sure not to reveal your salt scrub recipe though, because if you don’t, your friends will be so impressed with you!
