How to Make Old-Fashioned Popcorn

Popcorn is one of the favorite snacks of all times. A person can find popcorn in bags that can be popped in skillets, popcorn poppers, pans, and other stove top pots and pans. There are also a wide variety of microwave popcorns and let’s not forget the Jiffy Pop popcorn.

Many of us tend to steer away from the bagged popcorn kernels and the Jiffy Pop because of the convenience of the microwave popcorn. The beauty of the bagged popcorn kernels is they can be used in craft projects unpopped and can be used in Christmas tree decorations popped.

Popping the popcorn on the stove top in a heavy pan or skillet with a lid can be a good form of exercise as well. You are needing to use the upper part of your body to continually shake the pan during the popping process unless you are using a pan that has a stirring mechanism. However, you are getting a bit of exercise for your arms even with a popcorn pan with a stirring mechanism.

When using a plain skillet with a lid or the old-fashioned stir type popcorn pans, the popcorn will taste great. You can also control the amounts of oil, butter, and salt that are placed on the popcorn over the microwave popcorn. Popping your popcorn in this manner is great for those who are watching their calorie intake and wanting to add a bit of exercise into their routine.

1 cup popcorn kernels
1/4 oil

Heavy duty skillet or pan with a lid or old-fashioned popcorn popper with stirring mechanisms.

Heat oil in the pan, skillet, or popcorn popper.

Add the cup of popcorn and place the lid on top.

Continually shake or stir the popcorn during the popping process. You will notice the popping corn will ping the lid during the process. Don’t let this scare you. It’s a normal process in popping corn in this manner.

The popcorn will take approximately 2 to 4 minutes to pop. Once the popping has slowed down, remove from the heat so it doesn’t burn.

Empty the popcorn into a paper bag. Add the butter and salt. Shake for 30 seconds so the salt and butter is throughly mixed. Empty into a bowl.

Now you can enjoy your fresh hot popcorn. Grab a movie and your favorite drink and relax now that you have had about 10 minutes of exercise while making your favorite popcorn snack.
