How to Make Homemade Tuna Salad

When I’m in a kitchen, I can get pretty crazy. I don’t usually bother with looking at recipes; I just put together what sounds good and see what I can come up with. It’s much more fun this way!

To make tuna salad my way, here’s what you’re going to need:

Obviously, you’ll need tuna. Use however much you want. 1 can, 2 cans, maybe even 3! I like to use about 2 cans. Be sure to drain most of the oil or water out of it and put it in a large bowl.

After that, I add mayo. Add as much to your tuna as you think looks good. I love mayo, so my tuna salad is smothered in it.

Then, I’ll add a little bit of dill pickle relish. I’m not a huge fan of relish, so I’ll only add a heaping tablespoon. Add just a little at first and mix it. If you think you’d like more in there, then by all means, add more!

Next, cut up some hard-boiled eggs. Mix in with the tuna, mayo, and relish. Do you think you have enough? If not, add some more now or add some later when you get other things in it.

Then, add some onion. I’m not a big fan of onions either. I’m rather plain when it comes to taste. Therefore, I only chop up a small bit. If you’re a big fan of onions, then by all means, chop up a good amount. Add little, mix, and keep adding little by little until you have your desired amount. If you want, you might even take the time to sauté your onions. I haven’t tried it, but it sounds like it’d turn out good.

After that, throw in some shredded cheese. It doesn’t matter what kind. Simply add what you think will sound good. I personally like to use cheddar. Add any amount you want. I like to add a lot of cheese. I love the stuff. If it looks good, go with it!

Next, I’ll dice up some celery or black olives to throw in there. I love this stuff, so I’ll put in quite a bit. If it isn’t your thing, simply don’t add it.

Usually, that’s all I’ll add in my tuna salad. Some days I’ll throw in some salt and pepper for taste. Other days I’ll throw in some Mrs. Dash, garlic powder…just random seasonings to see how it’ll taste. I might add some brown spicy mustard too, once in awhile.

I’m sure there are many other things you can add to your tuna salad as well. Just be creative! To me, the important thing is that it looks good. If you’re the one making it, and if it looks and sounds good, it’ll probably turn out okay!

Use it as a topping for crackers or make a sandwich. You could always crush the crackers or tear pieces of bread to add to the tuna salad and eat it with a fork. Another option is eating it in a lettuce leaf and adding some tomato. Think of it as a low-carb versioned sandwich. Alternatively, you could just eat it the way it is!

Tuna salad is so flexible and easy to make, so eat up and make some extra for later on, if you want even more. Also, don’t forget to refrigerate it before and after serving.
