How to Make Children’s Sheet Sets

The cost of a set of sheets is unbelievable. People have a lot to put their money towards such as bills, food, gas, and such. There never seems to be enough money to cover everything and still have extra. That’s why families try to cut corners. They look for ways to have nice things and still have some money left over for everything else.

Children’s bedding gets costly, specially when you have four or five children. Every bed needs sheets, whether it be a bunk bed, a toddler bed, a full sized bed or a twin bed in your child’s room. Every bed actually needs at least four or five sets of sheets. You’ll want to always have fresh sheets on hand as changing them is very important.

Parents who need more sheets for their children can easily make their own. All you need to do is take some measurements, choose your fabric, get your needle and thread ready, and sew!

The measurements come first. Measure the length and the width of your child’s mattress. For the fitted sheet add seven inches onto each side for a total of fourteen inches added to the length and the width. For the flat sheet you take the measurement of the mattress and add two feet to each side and to one end. This allows for draping over the bedside which just makes it all look nice. It makes it extra long so it covers the edges of the mattress and box spring and also hides whatever is under the bed. It kind of resembles a bed skirt in look. For the pillowcase measure the pillows and add two inches to each side, or four inches to the total length and width.

To make the fitted sheet you’ll need elastic. One or two inch wide elastic works well, thinner will do but may be harder to work with. Hem all of the sides of the sheet as you would with a flat sheet. Then go to your corners. Use a ten inch strip of elastic and stitch it five inches on the corner of the side, and five inches on the corner of the top or bottom, whichever end you are working on.

To make a flat sheet simply cut your fabric to your measurements and hem all edges. To hem an edge simply fold it under half an inch and stitch with a needle and thread or a sewing machine.

To make a pillow case take a large piece of fabric and fold it in half. Cut to size using the fold in the fabric as a seem. Face prints sides in and stitch the two sides and the bottom. Turn right side out and then fold under and hem each separate side of opening. There you have it! Sheet sets, home made, made easy! Thanks for reading and take care!
