How to Make a Special Mother’s Day Poem

For many children, Mother’s Day is the time to pick a box of crayons and say “I love you” to mom in a special homemade card. For slightly older children, or even for younger ones looking for a challenge, writing a Mother’s Day poem is a great way to express your love for her.

Many children understand the concept of rhyme. Ball, hall, fall, it’s pretty easy to grasp. But just in case your youngster is having trouble finding adequate rhymes, find a rhyme dictionary online for them to consult.

1. There are several methods, but to start, let’s try the infamous default love poem. You might say it rings a bell:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
____________
________________

The last two lines are the part where things get interesting. Give the child an example poem, “Roses are red/Violets are blue/ But there is no mother/ Better than you!” Explain to the child that they need to find words that rhyme with blue.

2. Next, try the more original poem. Instead of sticking to the boring single spaced stanzas, make your poem into the shape of a bouquet of flowers, each flower have a short poem on it. First, have the child draw a vase. Work with them to write a short poem, making the words, lines, and stanzas into a rough shape of the vase. Next, draw large flowers in the vase itself, and make short poems with the above pattern. Don’t be afraid to change the lyrics a bit. Daisies are yellow, aren’t they? Yellow, mellow, jell-o, nearly every word has a few rhyming counterparts. Change the flower and color to suit the child’s need.

3. Your child also might have fun making a game poem. Start by helping them write about a dozen lines or so of poems. Then, let them search the internet for pictures of the world. For instance, if you are using the word flowers, find a picture of flowers and paste it carefully over the word on paper. As they boy or girl gives the poem to the child, have them explain the rules. Mommy has to read the poem as fast as she can, and understand the words. Use some harder pictures for fun.

These poetry-projects are great ways to show a boy/girl’s love for his or her mom. Always remember to let the child have fun, and Mom will love it.
