How to Make a Pumpkin Vase

Pumpkin vases have many purposes from being used as festive Thanksgiving centerpieces or for fall decorations. Pumpkin vases are very easy to make and if done right can be a smart festive decoration that has everyone wondering how it came out so well. This article is going to take a look at how to make a pumpkin vase well and what materials you need to complete the job. I have also included some tips and tricks to make the project go as smooth as possible.

Materials needed to make a pumpkin vase

Round pumpkin (medium size is best)

Pumpkin carving knife

Gloves

Floral arrangement

Plastic bag

Spoon

Small coffee can, small paint bucket, or glass vase that fits easily into the hollowed out pumpkin.

Directions to make a pumpkin vase

1. The first step in creating a pumpkin vase is to pick out the perfect pumpkin. The best pumpkin to choose would be a round one that will accommodate the coffee can, paint bucket, or glass vase in the center. Remember you can always cut the stems of the flowers you place inside so do not worry about the height; it only has to be able to fit the flower holder in the middle.

2. Cut the top of the pumpkin off using a pumpkin knife (generally safer to use than a traditional sharp knife). For best results try to keep the cutting symmetrical and lean since you will not be placing the top back on.

3. Hollow out the guts of the pumpkin by taking the seeds and filler out and placing them in a plastic bag to throw away. You can also use a spoon to help clear out all the pumpkin guts from the sides as they tend to stick there. You can use the gloves on this step if you really don’t like the feeling of pumpkin guts. This step is often loved by kids, so why not involve them in this project?

4. Place the coffee can, small paint bucket, or glass vase into the core of the pumpkin (make sure it cannot be seen). Fill the bucket (flower holder) with ½ – ¾ full with water.

5. Arrange a festive floral arrangement to your own tastes into the flower holder in the center of the pumpkin, and you’re done! The finished product makes great festive centerpieces for Thanksgiving or for dinner parties.

Tips and tricks

• Make sure the flower holder does not overflow with water when placing the floral arrangement in. If the water overflows you can have a rotting pumpkin very easily.

• Dry the pumpkin out entirely before moving to step 3 or else it will turn mushy and rot; you can use a blow dryer or paper towels to speed the process up.

• Use a fall floral arrangement for best results; they will fit seamless with the pumpkin for the desired look.

• Include children in the project; this is a very easy and family friendly fall craft project.
