How to Make a Greek Goddess Costume

Everyone will be saying Happy Halloween your greatness (and in Greek!) when they’ve seen your Greek goddess costume! More than just a toga, your costume can match your style and make a statement.

START WITH THE BASICS

Buy a basic tunic. Or, make a tunic or toga. This is the foundation for a winning goddess costume. You can go to your local fabric store and buy the appropriate length cloth. If you are going for the short look, measure from shoulder to just above the knee. If you are going for the full flowing look, measure from shoulder to the floor.

Using stitch witchery, fabric glue or basic stitching, add fabric trim accents, in gold or green, to the edges of your fabric. If you are not inclined to sew or pretend to sew, use fabric paint to add accents on your cloth.

Depending on your preference, wrap the fabric tunic or toga style. Secure the fabric with a decorative broach or safety pins.

ADD YOUR SENSE OF STYLE

Don’t forget that your costume is not complete without the right accessories. Your toga or tunic can be bound with either a thick golden belt or some colorful cording. Cording can be found at the fabric store or in the House wares Section of a local thrift or department store.

Your shoes can be basic sandals; however, for more flare, you can opt for Hercules style or laced sandals.

BE ORIGINAL

Even more originality can be found if you pattern your look after one of the powerful ladies in Greek Mythology.
With hundreds of goddesses to choose from, the options are endless. With just some hair and accessory adjustments, here are a few suggestions:

Athena – In addition to having been the patron God of Athens, Athena was Goddess of Wisdom. She was one of the Three Virgin Goddesses and a fierce warrior. In mythology, she is associated with owls and often depicted with a helmet and a girdle. To create this look, add a large broach and a wide golden belt to your long toga. If you don’t want to wear a helmet, straight hair or hair styled up will compliment the look.

Aphrodite – Everyone knows that Aphrodite is the Goddess of Beauty and Love. She is depicted in paintings with flowing hair and not much else. But, for Halloween, to transform you into this goddess, add a long wig and a flowered headpiece to your accented long tunic or toga.

Artemis – Artemis was the Goddess of the Hunt and twin sister to Apollo. She is seen as athletic. To create this look, use the short toga or tunic and a corded belt. Add a headdress of laurels with a small quiver of arrows and you are there. You quiver can’t be purchased from a sporting good shop or home-made from things around the house. Laced sandals would be a wonderful addition to this outfit as well.

Halloween can be fun for everyone. However, with this Greek goddess ensemble, you can be the hit of the party.
