How Double Hung Windows Are Made

One of the most familiar kinds of windows are the double hung windows. Double hung windows have a lower and upper sash that slides vertically in side jambs – each sash has its own separate groove – or they slide in full-width metal weatherstripping. This kind of window gives the maximum opening for ventilation: an entire one-half of the total area of the window. To hold it in place no matter where in the window it is located, each sash has balances, springs, or compression weatherstripping.

Make sure that corrosion-resistant nails are used in places where the nails are exposed, such as on the casings.

Hardware involves sash lifts fastened to the bottom rail, though these are sometimes replaced by a finger groove. There are also sash fasteners or locks at the meeting rail. These lock the window, but they also keep the sash together and give a fit that is tight enough to prevent the drafts from seeping through the window.

Double hung windows are used in a variety of ways. They can be doubled, used as a single unit, or can be arranged in groups of three or more. Some people even gain a window wall by using a double hung window on either side of a stationary window.
