Homemade Dry Shampoo for Oily Hair

Dry shampoo is essential for those who can’t wash their hair often enough, especially those who are hospitalized or debilitated. When I had spinal surgery, I couldn’t wash my hair for days, and dry shampoo was very helpful. Usually I could get away with washing my hair every other day, but by the third day it was quite oily and had the typical smell of dirty hair.

Homemade dry shampoo for oily hair eliminated the oily appearance and made my scalp feel exceptionally clean. Without homemade dry shampoo for oily hair my hair would have felt dirty and very oily. It was ideal for my situation, and it’s great for anyone who can’t wash their hair with water and regular shampoo. Consider the following homemade dry shampoo for oily hair. They’re all very good options, and much less expensive than store-bought products.

Sandalwood Powder

One of my favorite homemade dry shampoo remedies for an oily scalp is sandalwood powder. This pleasantly fragrant powder from India is often used as a base for lotions, powders, and much more, and it works wonders for oily hair. It can be found online or stores that sell products from India. After rubbing into thoroughly into the scalp, the hair smells clean, lightly fragrant, and not the least bit oily. Best of all since it’s brown, it doesn’t leave white residue that other homemade remedies leave behind if it isn’t fully rubbed into the scalp.

Arrowroot Starch

Another great product that can be used as homemade dry shampoo to treat oily hair is arrowroot starch. It’s also typically used in cooking and baking, and it’s finer than cornstarch. You’ll find arrowroot starch in stores that sell specialty baking and cooking supplies, and it can be found online. This homemade dry shampoo is a fantastic solution for an oily scalp, and it makes the head feel clean and refreshed.

Body Powder

A readily available homemade dry shampoo for oily hair is body powder. Many people use baby powder as dry shampoo, but body powder is really the better option. It naturally absorbs oil on the scalp, especially varieties containing cornstarch. It’s very fine, and has a clean fresh scent that leaves otherwise oily tresses feeling and looking clean.

Cornstarch

A completely natural homemade dry shampoo is ordinary cornstarch, and it’s one of the best products for absorbing oil, and for those who don’t want a dry shampoo with fragrance, it’s ideal. Apply cornstarch liberally to the scalp, and brush away any larger granules. After thoroughly brushing it won’t be apparent, and it will leave it feeling freshly washed and very clean.

Baking Soda and Cornstarch

Baking soda is a natural product that leaves the hair and scalp smelling sweet, and when combined with cornstarch it’s the perfect homemade shampoo for oily hair. Make a mixture of half baking soda and half cornstarch, and generously apply it to the scalp. Brush it through thoroughly, and repeat if necessary. Oily hair will no longer look oily, and it will smell fresh and clean.
