Historic Hotels in the Poconos of Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania are a longtime scenic tourist destination, know as the Honeymoon Capitol of the World. This majestic region Is a great getaway for couples and for families. Historic hotels of the Poconos have a long history of offering accommodations to guests. The mid 1920’s were a time of optimism and prosperity After World War I and before the economic collapse of the 1930’s. Skytop Lodge was the dream of four farsighted men who conceived the idea of building a grand resort in the Poconos, on a high plateau. The lodge was built three miles north of the village of Canadensis.

The men purchased eight tracts of land, much of it abandoned farm land, covered with brush and trees. A landscape architect has hired to choose the location of the lodge and golf course on the land. The natural stone lodge was built on a parcel overlooking Skytop Lake, with the flat surrounding grounds designated as the golf course. The Dutch Colonial stone manor began as a grandiose fieldstone clubhouse for the elite. Today the historic hotel offers accommodations with Old World charm in a wilderness area with spectacular view of the Pocono Mountains.

Skytop is a grand resort at the base of the West Mountain in the Pocono Mountains. The location is surrounded by natural scenery, with 30 miles of hiking trails weaving through the 5,500 acre property.

The Dutch Colonial style manor house overlooks Skytop Lake, with magnificent views of the region from every direction. Since opening in 1928, the resort has offered outdoor recreation during all seasons.

Recreation includes an indoor swimming pool, outdoor swimming pool, winter skiing, summer kayaking, an 18 hole golf course and sporting clays shooting range. The Skytop Spa is on the fifth floor of the lodge.

Skytop Lodge has a professional naturalist on staff, who ensures that plant and animals that inhabit the land are undisturbed.

The Inn at Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe is a picturesque historic village in the Pocono Mountains. The village was dubbed ‘America’s Little Switzerland” by the Swiss Tourist Board. The main street, Broadway, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jim Thorpe has a fascinating history, with interesting historic hallmarks including: home of world’s first roller coaster, home of America’s first railroad and birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Jim Thorpe was 2nd only to Niagara Falls as a tourist destination at the turn of the 20th century.

The Inn at Jim Thorpe, built in 1849, has provided lodging to some of the most influential and colorful people in the 19th century. The New Orleans style grand hotel is situated in the historic district of the village.

The hotel website has a section for ghost stories, where guests have written their eerie experiences at this historic inn, which seems to be haunted.
