Great Hurricane Lanterns

As the name suggests, hurricane lanterns are perfect for outdoor use in windy conditions, but they can be just as useful in indoor settings as well. Most of us are probably familiar with the old-fashioned versions of the hurricane lantern, similar to those seen in old movies hanging on the back of a train from the caboose or as old time miners worked their way through aging gold mines. Nowadays, many of this style’s lanterns are still designed much as they were years ago, but there are a variety of other options and more modern versions available to today’s consumers. Here are a few of the top hurricane lanterns if you are looking for a useable but still stylish lamp.

Dietz lamps – For a great price when it comes to a vintage looking hurricane lamp, it’s hard to beat Dietz. Their Little Wizard series oil burning lanterns provide great protection from the wind, with a vintage flair that will take you back to a time when all covered wagons and pioneers had to see with in blizzards and windstorms were lanterns like these. Great for indoor or outdoor use, the majority of these little jewels run between fifteen and thirty dollars a piece, so you get a pretty good bang for your buck.

Glass oil lamps – Definitely affordable and taking you back in time to Victorian-era homes in which these beautiful lamps sat on tables and hung from walls, the glass oil lamp is another good option. This type of lamp can look old even if you just bought it yesterday, and it can add a touch of class to almost any room.

Garden gaslights — If you’re looking for a chic, modern version to light your outside entertaining area, consider a garden gas light. While typically more expensive than the older-style oil lamps, many of these gaslights use a small propane tank as their fuel source. This aspect of their design makes for easier transportation since you don’t have to worry about spilling lamp oil when refilling or having to empty them of fuel to keep it from sloshing out at inopportune moments.

Candle Lamps – While they don’t always use candles as fuel, this smaller style of lamp can add your own personal touch to a tabletop, counter, shelf or other area of your home. For a flashy club look, consider the Metropolitan. With a 45-hour fuel cartridge (although smaller cartridges are available),you can get hours of enjoyment out of this tiny lantern without the hassle of having to add fuel, and when it does finally run out, replacing the disposable fuel cartridge is quick and easy.

Weatherproof Hurricane lantern — If style isn’t important and you’re just looking for a reliable outdoor source of light, consider a battery powered weatherproof hurricane lantern. If you can’t afford to worry about treating your lantern with delicacy, sloshing oil, or carrying extra liquid fuel with you, a weatherproof hurricane lantern might be your best option. Great for camping or emergencies, a weatherproof lantern made with a rugged and durable frame can take a beating and still be there for you when you need it.
