Great Fall Festivals in New England

I, like most others, love the summertime. Especially in New England where beaches and summer activities are plentiful. However all good things come to an end and this is true for summer in New England at least for another nine months or so. Fall in New England however does not mean the end of all things good…after all baseball season comes to an exciting conclusion, football is just ramping up and there are activities all over. Often times we forget that the fall can still be outdoor weather and that there are still plenty of options.

In addition to bike riding and running, there are many activities sure to keep you out and about including apple picking, pumpkin picking and haunted hayrides. Most events are in the form of festivals held throughout picturesque New England.

In September for example you can take a quick ferry to Martha’s Vineyard, MA for the 4th Annual International Film Festival held on September 10th through September 13th. The Festival is complete with films from around the world. There are many events scheduled for this weekend and will be plenty to see and do.

The same dates also offer MaineFare in Camden and Rockport Maine. This event showcases some of the best chefs in the are and also offers classes and taste testings.

On September 19th and 20th don’t miss out on the 10th Annual Telluride by the Sea event in Portsmouth, NH. This film festival has the town of Portsmouth hopping and films being celebrated. This event is in coordination with the original Telluride Film Festival in Colorado and is meant to being that even on a much smaller scale to New England.

On September 25th, 26th and 27th be sure to head over to historic Newport, RI for the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival. This event is held in a few of the historic mansions overlooking the Atlantic. This experience is a great one for wine and food lovers everywhere.

In October there is always the “Annual Harpoon Octoberfest” in Boston, MA. This year being held on Friday October 2nd and Saturday October 3rd. This festival is full of beer, German food and music and bound to be a fun-filled event.

On Saturday October 10th don’t miss out on “Waterfire” in Providence, RI. While this event is held during multiple weekends from May until October, this is the last “Waterfire” of the year. In addition this one is for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation. The bonfires are lit all along the Providence River. There is beautiful music and amazing tributes. This is an event to remember.

Also in October there is the Mystic Seaport Chowderfest held in scenic Mystic, CT on October 10th, 11th and 12th. Nothing says New England like a festival dedicated to one of the local specialties. In addition Mystic itself is a beautiful city with a full-fledged aquarium and shopping village. It is quintessential New England and bound to be fun for the entire family.

On October 17th and 18th enjoy the Wellfleet Oyster Fest complete with all types of shellfish (especially of course oysters) and an arts and crafts fair. There is even a shucking contest for those of you who think you know how to shuck an oyster! Nothing says New England quite like this. This event is held in Wellfleet Cape Cod MA.

October 23rd, 24th and 25th don’t miss out on the 29th Annual Essex Fall Craft and Fine Art Show in Essex Junction, VT. Vermont boasts some of the most beautiful fall foliage New England has to offer and this festival is consistently regarded as one of the top in the United States.

Finally Halloween Weekend boasts numerous events all around New England. Due to the historical aspect of New England there are plenty of ghost stories to tell and many perfect locations to tell them in. The names of just a few. “Haunted Graveyard at Lake Compounce” (Bristol, CT), “Nautical Nightmares at Mystic Seaport” (Mystic, CT), “Day of the Dead Fiesta at Peabody Essex Museum” (Salem, MA) and “Fort Adams Fortress of Nightmares” (Newport, RI)

Whatever you choice for a fun-filled weekend in New England you are sure not to be bored.
